Dear
Registration is now open...
2014 NALA Annual Convention, July 23-25
Charleston, South Carolina

Details of the 39th annual convention of NALA are now available on the NALA web site at this link.  This is a terrific program, and a terrific location!

Education is the focus of NALA meetings and there is a great line up this year! Educational sessions will take place the mornings of July 23, 24 and 25, and the member exchange educational sessions will take place the afternoon of Thursday,  July 24.

The program has been approved for CLE credit by the NALA Certifying Board, North Carolina State Bar, and the Texas Board of Legal Specialization of the State Bar of Texas. NALA is a State Bar of California approved MCLE provider, and has accredited sponsor status from the  Montana State Bar. NALA CLE programs meet the requirements for Florida Registered Paralegals and NALA CLE programs are approved by the Louisiana State Paralegal Association for Louisiana Certified Paralegals. More details regarding CLE credit may be found at this link.

There will be six institutes on the following subjects:

Anatomy of a Case
This course offers practical strategies for managing litigation from beginning to the end. Subjects to be discussed include successful case management techniques, electronic discovery, budget and cost management, trial practices and techniques.

For Corporate Paralegals
A wide range of subjects will be discussed, including the variety of compliance issues which challenge in-house paralegals every day. This includes matters pertaining to the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, anti-bribery and anti-money laundering best practices, import/export concerns, and SEC compliance. Contract terms and provisions and specific agreements that corporate paralegals frequently draft, edit or review will be discussed. Technologies that corporate paralegals often use in their day to day work will also be discussed.

Discovery
Do you live for and love Discovery?  You will after you take this course!  Paralegals will be able to (1) understand and draft discovery requests and responses (civil and criminal); and deal with discovery of ESI; (2) understand ethical implications in discovery; and (3) choose, locate, and assist attorneys in working with experts from inception to trial.  Tips for both civil and criminal practice are included.

Elder Law
The Elder Law Institute provides a tour of the practical and legal components of an elder law practice. The tour begins by examining the key elements and services of an elder law practice. Attention will focus on the paralegal's role, ethical and relational challenges that arise with older clients, common legal services and useful resources. The second session launches with an interactive discussion with a professional care manager on how to navigate the maze of long-term care options and how to provide practical solutions for a client's care needs. Finally, the tour ends by providing resources to preserve the autonomy and dignity of senior adults in their housing needs, family relationships, vulnerability and end-of-life decisions.

Essential Skills Institute
The Essential Skills Institute will cover legal research, judgment and legal analysis, and written communications. During legal research, you will learn a simple research procedure that can be used in any law library. Judgment and legal analysis will cover techniques to categorize facts and evidence, to analyze the relevant ones, and to organize them into a final product; and written communication will conclude this institute by covering the most difficult areas of writing for people in the legal environment. This course is helpful for everyone, especially those studying for the Certified Paralegal Examination.

Intellectual Property Law
Do you cringe at the mere mention of the words Intellectual Property? Or has it intrigued you and you've wondered how to break into that fabulous field? Then this course is for you: covering Trademarks, Copyrights and Patents, we will bring you back to the basics. It may remind you why you engaged in IP practice to begin with and restart your passion, or it will leave you falling in love with a desire to give this area a try!

The brochure describing this meeting is now in the mail to all members and Certified Paralegals. To access details of the entire meeting click here
or download the copy of the convention brochure from this link.
