I'd give all wealth that years have piled,
The slow result of life's decay,

To be once more a little child,
For one bright summer-day."

-Lewis Carroll, "Solitude"

We're having our Grandkids spend the night this weekend... and in observing the dynamics of them, I'm convinced that if you spend a little time with children, or just observing them, you might learn a few lessons that could help your health.

HOT OFF THE PRESSES
Tightening Hours Regulations Garner National Media Attention

Turns out, trucking industry stakeholders aren't the only ones who have shown interest in the changes to driver hours-of-service changes that went into effect this week: Some prominent national media outlets have reported on the subject, too. Most notably, The Wall Street Journal published a piece on its website and on the front page of its Marketplace section on July 3. Its headline reads "Truckers are losing sleep over 70-hour work limit," and it calls the rule changes "the most significant overhaul of rules governing truck-driver hours in a decade." Continue reading

Trucking sheds 3,500 jobs in June

The for-hire trucking industry continued to pull back from its recent hiring binge, cutting another 3,500 payroll jobs in June, according to preliminary estimates released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The reduction was on top of a revision in May figures to reflect a loss of 2,600 jobs rather than the 700-job reduction initially reported last month.

The economy as a whole continued to add net new jobs, however. Total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 195,000 in June, and gains in April and May were revised upward to about that same number, according to preliminary BLS figures. In June, employment rose in leisure and hospitality, professional and business services, retail trade, health care and financial activities. The unemployment rate was unchanged at 7.6... Training programs flourish as mechanics, metal and factory workers highly sought

Sparks shot across the room at the L.J. Shosten Training Center in St. Paul as apprentices welded pipes and ground prickly steel to a smooth finish. Nearby, others hovered over a misaligned motor like doctors tending a patient. Workers with the United Brotherhood of Carpenters union have been feverishly busy, yet Paul Trudeau remains worried. "We are short on manpower," said Trudeau, the head of training for Minnesota's next generation of industrial repairmen and mechanics for the union.
