Last month, the California Business Alliance (CBA) became one of the first endorsers for California Delivers, a coalition of businesses, public health advocates, workers, public officials, and community and faith leaders who support California's pioneering clean energy and climate law, AB 32. In just a couple of weeks, California Delivers has grown to more than 120 members representing hundreds of thousands of Californians.

I invite all CBA members to endorse California Delivers on behalf of your company or as an indvidual. We all need to be part of delivering on the promise of cleaner and healthier air, a strong economy, investments in communities, and more clean energy and fuel choices.

I also hope you will check out a terrific op-ed in the Sacramento Bee entitled "AB 32 shifts California toward better economy" by Tim McRae, energy director for Silicon Valley Leadership Group, a CBA member. McRae reminds us that "California entrepreneurs have opened more clean-energy businesses, created more new jobs and collected more clean-technology venture capital funding than any other state since AB 32 passed in 2006."

Following up on last month's launch of our California Means Business (CMB) initiative, you will find a recurring feature in this newsletter that highlights and recaps recent good news stories about California's business community. You can follow weekly CMB updates on our website, Facebook page and Twitter feed and by following the Twitter hashtag #CAMeansBusiness and @CAGoBiz.

As always, thank you for your ongoing support.

AB 32 shifts California toward better economy

By Tim McRae
Energy Director for the Silicon Valley Leadership Group.

10/18/2014

"California entrepreneurs have opened more clean-energy businesses, created more new jobs and collected more clean-technology venture capital funding than any other state since AB 32 passed in 2006. The clean-tech sector, which creates products and services to assist the shift toward low-carbon-based products and processes, is doing well. Though early-stage venture capital in this sector has ebbed, later-stage investments have increased in the last half-decade, according to Next10. California's clean-tech investment portfolio also is increasingly diversified, a good portent for future growth."

Cool California Small Business Awards

The California Air Resources Board (ARB) is accepting applications now through today, Nov. 3 for its fifth CoolCalifornia Small Business Awards Program, which recognizes small businesses that integrate environmental stewardship and sustainability into their business practices.

California small businesses that reduce energy use, conserve water and minimize their greenhouse gas emissions are demonstrating climate leadership and can compete for a CoolCalifornia Small Business Award.

"This is an opportunity to recognize the many small businesses across the state that are taking actions to save money while reducing their environmental impacts and greenhouse gas emissions," ARB Chairman Mary D. Nichols said. "These small business leaders are demonstrating that making smart climate-friendly choices is good for the environment and for their bottom line."

Small businesses that meet the requirements can apply here for an award - the deadline for application is Nov. 3, 2014. Winners will be recognized by ARB at a public ceremony in Sacramento in February 2015, and will be profiled on the CoolCalifornia.org website and in a statewide press release.
