eNews Update | October 2014 | www.clean-economy.org |
When we created the California Business Alliance more than five years ago, we intended to build a large network of companies that support the state's approach to clean energy and climate policy. We have proudly succeeded in that task; yet, there still are forces in the broader business community that don't want to share the positive news about California's economic success.
So, we just launched California Means Business (CMB), which is the place to read the good news about California businesses - how they are growing, expanding, investing, setting the tone, and illustrating why our state is the 8th largest economy in the world.
CMB will serve as a communications hub to push out the good news about mainstream California business success. We will use the hashtag #CAMeansBusiness through social media, and ask for your help in sharing the news about our state's vibrant business community.
Thanks to those of you that have visited our redesigned website, Facebook page and Twitter feed and to all the positive feedback about our rebranded look.
As always, thank you for your ongoing support.
~Susan Frank Director, California Business Alliance

West Coast Climate Leaders Respond to UN Climate Summit
Leaders from California, Oregon, Washington and British Columbia on the UN 2014 Climate Summit
The leaders of California, Oregon, Washington and British Columbia, as part of the Pacific Coast Action Plan on Climate and Energy, agreed last year to work together to advance national and international policy on climate change.
As world leaders gather in New York for the UN Secretary General's Climate Leadership Summit, Pacific Coast leaders delivered statements of support for bold, decisive action.
California Governor Jerry Brown attended the Summit and remarked, "Carbon pollution kills, it undermines our environment, and, long-term, it's an economic loser. There has to be a price on carbon, because there is a price on carbon - it's the consequences to health, to the economy, and to our climate. We face an existential challenge with the changes in our climate. The time to act is now."

Cool California Small Business Awards
The Air Resources Board is accepting applications now through Nov. 3 for its fifth CoolCalifornia Small Business Awards Program, which recognizes small businesses that integrate environmental stewardship and sustainability into their business practices.
California small businesses that reduce energy use, conserve water and minimize their greenhouse gas emissions are demonstrating climate leadership and can compete for a CoolCalifornia Small Business Award.
"This is an opportunity to recognize the many small businesses across the state that are taking actions to save money while reducing their environmental impacts and greenhouse gas emissions," ARB Chairman Mary D. Nichols said. "These small business leaders are demonstrating that making smart climate-friendly choices is good for the environment and for their bottom line."
Small businesses that meet the requirements can apply here for an award between Sept. 2, 2014, and Nov. 3, 2014. Winners will be recognized by ARB at a public ceremony in Sacramento in February 2015, and will be profiled on the CoolCalifornia.org website and in a statewide press release.

Zan Media Kickstarter
Marin County, CA - Zan Media is looking for contributors to a one-hour film, GOLDEN GIRLS, CALIFORNIA'S NEW BREED OF FEMALE FARMERS.
Hosted by author, environmental activist and vegetarian cattle rancher, Nicolette Hahn Niman ('Righteous Porkchop", 2010; "Defending Beef", 2014), the goal of the movie is to showcase the special relationship women share with the land and its bounty, as they forge a prominent role in the locally grown food movement.
Says Producer Christine Scioli, "by contributing to the production of the film, and sharing individual stories of a diverse group of women, we can further understand and embrace the most basic and human female instinct; to nourish, with respect and appreciation. What the incomparable Chef Alice Waters says about "Defending Beef" mirrors our production mission: "Creating healthful, delicious food in ecological balance is among humanity's greatest challenges."
Ultimately, the goal is to produce a similar film highlighting each state in the country.
The Kickstarter link provides more information about the project, this Bay Area certified green film and video production company, and the movie trailer.
