Rev. Andy Burnette has served since August 2012 as Senior Minister at Valley Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Chandler. He served the Unitarian Universalist Community Church in Danville, Indiana, from 2007 to 2012. From 2000 to 2007, Rev. Burnette served Church of the Nazarene congregations in southern Indiana. He was a journalist covering local government and writing a humor column in Columbus, Indiana, from 1998 to 2000.

Board of Trustees Meeting
Tuesday, May 24 at 6:00 PM in the Johnson Room
We invite all members to join us for the monthly Board of Trustees meeting on Tuesday, May 24 in the Johnson Room. Break bread and socialize with us starting at 6:00 PM, and the meeting begins at 6:30 PM. Guests are invited to address the board during guest comments at the beginning and observe the remainder of the meeting. At this meeting the board will prepare for the June congregational meeting and discuss how to evaluate the minister as a supervisor. Community Night & Variety Hour
Thursday, June 2, 6:00 PM
From May through September, we will be holding Community Night dinners on the first Thursday of each month.  Dinner is a potluck, so bring your favorite dish, and stay for fun activities afterward.  June's activity is a variety hour with Benjie.  Kids are welcome to participate, so there will not be Chalice Kids programming. Bring your appetite, enthusiasm and a dish or dessert to share. You are welcome to bring a sack supper if you prefer.

Our next UUCP Variety Hour is Thursday June 2 from 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM in the sanctuary, after a 6:00 PM community night potluck in the Johnson Room. This is a no-talent talent-show, a relaxed, all-ages chance to share your creativity and culture with the congregation. Music, poetry, theater, jokes, inventions, foods, etc. are all fair game, and non-performers are welcome to attend as well. There's no need to sign up in advance- just let Music Director Benjie Messer know what you'd like to do when you arrive.
Sewing and Craft Circle
Saturday, June 4, drop in between 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM
The UUCP Sewing and Craft Circle will meet in the Johnson Room on June 4th-drop in between noon and 4:00 PM. The group makes simple pattern dresses, quilts, backpacks and knitted items to support marginalized children locally as well as Mexico, South America and around the world. This group is part of the justice ministry. Everyone is welcome to attend, share creative ideas as well as stitch and talk. A sewing machine is nice to bring but not necessary. UUCP Community Book Corner
First Sunday of the Month in the Sanctuary
The UUCP Community Book Corner is the first Sunday of each month. June's theme is strength, and there are three featured books, one each, for adults, young adults and children. There will be other books, as well, which promote our UU values. Come celebrate the theme of strength with a purchase, browsing or sharing your thoughts!
Fortification: Organizing on the Side of Love
Sign up for an 8-session course over the summer to explore current ideas and models of community organizing and justice work. Emrys Staton will facilitate discussions based on the course on every other Sunday after worship service. Our first meeting will be June 5 at 1:00pm, Annex B. $30 registration and $15 book purchase.

This Summer, our Sunday School classes will focus on upcycling.  Each week we will turn recyclables into art, tools, and toys. Here's a list of what we're looking for:

OWL Facilitator Training
May 27-29 at UUCP
UUCP is hosting a facilitator training for those interested in being certified to teach Our Whole Lives in the Middle School (grades 7-9) & Sr. High (grades 10-12) levels.
 
The 22-hour training will take place May 27-29 at the UU Congregation of Phoenix in Paradise Valley. (5PM-9:30PM on Friday May 27th, 8AM-9:30PM on Saturday, and 8AM-2PM on Sunday.) The cost is $200 for the course, plus $19.99 for a required background check. Some home-stays are available for out of town trainees.

Addiction Recovery Group
Monday, May 23, at 7:00 PM in Annex C
Some anonymous members of the congregation are opening a addiction recovery meeting on Monday nights at 7:00 PM. It will be based on UU Principles and have a free form type of orientation. This will be a discussion group of like minded individuals who are seeking recovery from drug and alcohol addictions. Any members who wish to participate can call John Moats at 602-300-4743. We will be meeting at 7:00 PM on Monday evenings in Annex C. The 1st and possibly 2nd meeting will be about the direction our members want to go as far as formats, snacks, coffee etc. We are planning on starting on May 23, so come one come all because your love and gratitude are always welcome.  
Memorial Day Camping Weekend at SAWUURA
Friday, May 27 - Monday, May 30, 2016
SAWUURA is our own UU 100-acre woods in the Sierra Ancha Wilderness near Young, AZ (about 4 hrs drive from Phoenix). Join dozens of other UUs Memorial Day weekend for a relaxing weekend under the stars. Disconnect from your phones, computers, TVs and share meals, hikes, music and laughter with other nature-lovers. Meals are provided with the cost of registration, just bring snacks, drinks, and camping gear. Registration Fees: $45 per adult ($35 for SAWUURA members), $25 per child. NEW HEARING ASSIST DEVICES
Our new hearing assistance devices are available for Sunday worship services.  Our ushers will be happy to provide you with devices that make it easier to hear anything that is picked up by a microphone.  These devices have a wide range throughout our campus, including the bathrooms, nursery and patio, so parents can also use the devices if they need to step out of the sanctuary with their child.
