Help Make Coffee Hour Even More Delicious

Would you like to help bring new, healthy offerings to coffee hour? We are looking for volunteers who would be willing to occasionally bring 3 pounds of bite-sized fruits or vegetables on Sunday. We will have serving dishes, you would just bring the fruit or veggies by before the service. We will have a clipboard for sign-up by the cookies at coffee hour each Sunday, or you can click here to sign up online.
THIS SUNDAY AT 10:30 AM
July 27:  Bluegrass Gospel
Service leader: Anne Byrne, Director of Children's Ministries
Bluegrass music has its roots in the music brought to America by immigrants from Ireland, Scotland and England, as well as African American gospel music and blues. Characterized by acoustic string instruments and vocal harmonies, bluegrass gospel music is a distinctive form of praise to life after death and living a holy life in the here and now. Join the Heretics, a band of UUCP members (Anne Byrne, Bonnie and Dave Cunningham, Fred Garza and Dave Bellama) in honoring and celebrating bluegrass gospel at this music service.
Travel to Austria with the World Travelers

We are off to Austria this week!  Our summer religious education program for children includes visits to countries all over the world to sample local culture, food, crafts and art.  Last week we toured India and now we visit Austria. Our tour guides this week are the Mother-Daughter duo of Trude Becker and our own Karen Kurtz. In this class, the kids will visit the Austrian countryside through slides and video and experience the culture of the Vienna Boys Choir.  We will make flowers and taste Austrian pastries.

NEXT SUNDAY AT 10:30 AM
August 3:  It's Not What You First Think
Service leader: Gary Ezzell
The stories we are told, and the stories that we tell ourselves, influence who we are. To change us, a story must turn away from the familiar into the unexpected. Today we will dip into a wisdom source we seldom visit, the New Testament, and see how the stories we call parables had elements that were unexpected to Jesus' listeners and challenged them (and now us) to imagine possibilities that seemed unthinkable.

Spaces are available in UUCP cooperative preschool for 2, 3, 4 and 5 year olds.  Come see the school in operation at an Open House on August 4 from 9:30 - 11:30 AM  The preschool was started 50 years ago by congregational moms and has continuously provided an intimate, family-oriented and child centered educational experience to hundreds of children over the years.  In addition to a high quality preschool experience, our EEC provides valuable parent education on the ups and downs of raising preschool children.  For more information, email Anne Byrne, Director of Children's Ministries.

Connie's Farewell Party

Saturday, July 26, at 4:00 PM
Our beloved choir director, Connie Jahrmarkt, is resigning at the end of July. Please join us in the sanctuary at 4:00 PM on Saturday, July 26, to thank and appreciate Connie for her sixteen years of wonderful service at UUCP! This farewell party is also a last chance for us to make music with Connie while she's working at UUCP, so bring your voices, your instruments and your ears. (And if you bring your appetite, we will have some refreshing snacks.)

Addiction Discussion Group Time Change

The Addiction Discussion Group will meet at 6:00 PM on Saturday, July 26, to allow the group to attend Connie's Farewell Party.

This addictions support group meets to discuss various compulsive and addictive behaviors. We provide a safe haven to discuss how our week has been and to talk openly about our spiritual beliefs. It is designed for those with stable recovery (we ask for 6 months of sobriety.) For more information, call Gene at 480-361-9067.

Celebrate Diversity at August's Community Night Potluck

August 7 at 6:00 PM in the Johnson Room
This month, please bring a dish to pass that reflects your cultural heritage. Alternatively, bring a family or holiday favorite or something you've learned to like or make that is not "American" (no hot dogs or apple pie!) or your own sack supper.  We will enjoy the diversity of foods, people, and conversations. Children are welcome but there will be no childcare services.

New Accessible Ramp

Construction on the ramp to the main building from the Annexes will begin on Monday, August 11, and should be done that week. During this period the walkway gate and the middle door to the ramp will not be available. To access the Annex buildings you will need to use the gate at the West end of the upper parking lot.  Small Groups meeting during this time will meet in the Johnson Room.

Congratulations, Caleb and Katie

Caleb Crabbs and Katie Gibson were elected to the Youth Board of the Pacific Southwest District. UUCP is well represented by these two outstanding youth!

Here on the pulse of this new day

You may have the grace to look up and out

And into your sister's eyes, into

Your brother's face, your country

And say simply

Very simply

With hope

Good morning.
