UU Day at the AZ Legislature:  Giving Voice to UU Values
February 17, 2014  - 10:00 AM - Senate Gallery
Unitarian Universalists from across the state will visit our state legislators to address issues and values that will impact the 2014 legislative session.  Last year over 140 UUs met with more than 20 legislators. February 16:  Lessons in Love

Drawing on Greek mythology, contemporary plays, movies, and Johnny Cash, Roger will explore lessons about love.     

Guest Minister:
The Rev. Roger Bertschausen is the Senior Minister of the Fox Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Appleton, Wisconsin.  He has served there since 1990.  During his ministry, the congregation has grown from 100 to 675 members. Roger has been involved in numerous roles in his district, the UU Ministers Association, the UU Partner Church Council, and has focused particularly on diversity and multiculturalism organizations in Appleton.
Lynne Haeseler and Dave Fox Performance
Enjoy an afternoon program of jazz with composer and pianist Dave Fox, Sunday, February 16 at 4:00 PM in the sanctuary.  Dr. Fox is head of the jazz program at Greensboro College in North Carolina and is touring the West Coast with a stop in Phoenix!  Since 2004, Dave released a series of critically-acclaimed recordings in the jazz world, including Gatewalk, If These Songs Could Talk, and Home Again. A coffee/tea reception follows the program.  Dave will also be guest musician for February 16 Sunday services.  Admission at the door: $10, partial fundraiser for UUCP.

In Buddhism, Loving-kindness is an ancient practice of meditation used to encourage a person's spiritual development and maturity.  How can these practices and lessons be useful in our lives and personal growth?

"Why Size Matters:  the Joys and Challenges of a Growing Congregation"

Thursday, February 20, at 6:45 PM in Annex F, the Board of Trustees invites you to the next Board Chat. This month, the board will be presenting a briefing, "Why Size Matters:  the Joys and Challenges of a Growing Congregation."  This is an adaptation of a presentation that has been given to both the Board and the Council, and it will touch on topics of governance, organizational structure, staffing, communications, and the changing nature of managing a congregation as it grows through various size categories.  Questions or comments?  Email Linda Bellantoni or call her at 602-626-5889.
Open Small Group Ministry
young-couch-people.jpg Join us for the Open Small Group Ministry on Thursday, February 20, from 7:00 - 8:30 PM in Annex H. You are invited to do something kind and loving for yourself!  Come to the guided discussion of loving-kindness to listen and/or share ideas, to laugh, to be inspired, and to get to know other members of our community in a safe, caring environment.  Contact Gary if you have any questions. 
Couples Enrichment Workshop

This is a workshop for couples who want to work on their relationship, regardless of how long they have been together.  You will explore how to relate to each other and strengthen and rejuvenate your connection to each other.  Topics will include healthy communications, respecting differences, resolving conflicts, healing past hurts, relating to your larger community and others.  Workshop meets Thursdays at 6:30 PM from February 20 to March 28. Kids Kamp and Preschool Open House

Saturday, February 22, 9:00 AM - noon.

Bring the family out to enjoy Kids Kamp and preschool activities and learn more about these two terrific programs for youth at UUCP.  Learn more about the new Service Learning Program for middle school youth and FridayField Trips at Kids Kamp.  Meet our preschool teachers and families and hear about enrollment options for the next school year.  RSVP to Director Anne or call 602-840-8400 ext 233 for more information.

Weather: An Atmospheric Cabaret
This year's cabaret will feature songs of sunshine, stormy dances and rainy-day blues.  RSVP to Benjie for childcare for kids too young to watch the show. Dinner will not be served, but snacks are included, and desserts and drinks will be available for purchase.  You can buy tickets from members of our choir or on our website.  Admission is $10 for an individual or $25 for a family.  Everyone is invited, so please save the date, Saturday, February 22!
"We Care" Work Day
Calling all diggers, pruners, cleaners, painters and pretty-up makers!  Join the Home & Garden Team on Saturday, March 1 9:00 AM to noon to help with a variety of indoor and outdoor projects around our campus.  We will provide coffee and bagels and ask you to bring your work gloves, rakes, shovels, and pruning tools (if you have them!).  RSVP to the Home & Garden Team  or Heidi at 602-840-8400 ext. 202.
Uncovering Classism Workshop
Join Facilitator Gene Cherry on March 2, 9, & 16 from 9:00 to 10:30 AM in Annex B.  The participants will explore what social class means to us and how we as UUs developed an Upper Class identity.  We will ask how can we be more welcoming and accepting of a wider diversity of people. Featured Ministry:  Share the Plate
Every month since 2008, UUCP has "shared the plate" by donating one week's Sunday service offering to a non-profit 501(c)(3), tax exempt charitable organization (or a foreign charity that would be tax-exempt if it were in the U.S.) that benefits our community.  To nominate an organization to receive the collection, complete the online application form found on our UUCP website.  For more information, contact the Share the Plate Committee.
