Guardino & Symonds are crowd pleasers at CTE Conference

The fourth-annual CTE Conference was held Sept. 27 at the Santa Clara County Office of Education. There was an increase in the number of counselors and administrators that attended. The survey results show that the conference, which was sponsored by the local community colleges, continues to be beneficial to all stakeholders. Repeatedly, we recieved positive comments that Carl Guardino was amazing and  the keynote speakers were outstanding. Another respondent wrote that the conference "helped us to shift our paradigm of thinking on transitioning out of high school and it was a big help to our understand-ing and ability to move in a new direction." Additional  feedback indicated:

  • 96 percent felt exhibits provided literature to support programs
  • 95 percent felt the conference was effective in increasing their understanding of CTE
  • 91 percent felt the conference met their expectations

If you missed the conference, you can still download presentations.

Common Core State Standards Common Core Logoand how they affect CTE

A PowerPoint presentation has been created to be used state-wide to show how the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) will affect CTE. The presentation includes the CCSS: A New Foundation for Student Success video.  This video emphasizes that employers express that students are unprepared for the workforce and the CCSS will help better prepare students for both careers and college. The video is an excellent resource to share with all stakeholders, including parents.

CDE released draft of new CTE model CDE Logo curriculum standards

The draft of the new model curriculum standards were released in late August. The standards will go to the State Board
of Education in January for approval.

There were few changes to the names of the industry sectors, but there were several changes to the career pathways. Each of the industry sectors below concludes with an academic matrix with Common Core Standards aligned to the each of the career pathways:

Business Partner Spotlight

SYNNEX Corporation is one example of a company that understands the value
of providing engineering internships to high school students. This past summer, SYNNEX provided three 40-hour-a-week internships to three students from San Jose and Notre Dame High Schools. The SYNNEX Internship video allows the students and Debra LaTourette, Vice President of Human Resources, to discuss the benefits of the internships to the students, company and employees. The students worked with company engineers, and received hands-on projects that provided real-world learning.
