What is the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend?

Every October, the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation sponsors the official national tribute to all firefighters who died in the line of duty during the previous year. Thousands attend the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend in Emmitsburg, Maryland.

Is it an official Half-Staff Day?

Yes, It's public law.
Here's an excerpt of the Joint Resolution:

"Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That each year, the American flags on all Federal office buildings will be lowered to half-staff in honor of the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service in Emmitsburg, Maryland. Approved October 16, 2001."

What if the National Memorial site is closed due to the government shutdown?

Alternate locations for the memorial ceremony are being planned just in case.
