Yikes, Doctor Removed A Mole From My Back!

My doctor recently removed a mole from my back because it was a little funny looking--brown with a black center. Obviously, this is one I couldn't see, so you need to have someone have your back, so to speak. I am now waiting for the results and I will let you know in the next newsletter. I am one of those boomers who used baby oil and iodine while lying on a foil mat to tan. Basically, we just used to fry our skin. I can't believe we did that knowing what we know now.

According to a Glamour Magazine survey, 43% of women suffered a sun burn in the past year and 72% percent have had more than five in their lifetime, a factor that doubles your risk of melanoma. Warning, you may not want to read the following.

Forty-six percent (46%) said they have used a tanning bed and unfortunately just one indoor tanning session before age 35 ups your odds of melanoma by 75%. According to the Glamour article, there are more cancer cases from indoor tanning than there are lung cancer cases due to smoking.

I've done more than 10,000 makeovers and I have seen some suspicious moles, so here are a few ABCs about moles:

A=Asymmetry: If you draw a line through the mole, the two halves don't match.
B=Border: The border around the mole is uneven or notched.
C=Color: It's not one color, but multiple shades of brown, black, or tan.
D=Diameter: Most melanomas are larger than a pencil eraser.
E=Evolving: This is the most common warning sign of skin cancer; a mole that has changed in size, shape, or color.
U=Ugly Duckling: It doesn't look like your other moles.

THE SUN IS YOUR FRIEND IF YOU DON'T GET TOO MUCH OF IT. Just 15 minutes a day will get you all the Vitamin D you need, but if you have to be out longer, use a safe sunscreen. Chemical sunscreens are being studied and they show they change your skin's DNA. I have always advised my clients not to use them. Natural Zinc Sunscreen Recipe

1/4 cup Coconut Oil

1/4 cup Shea Butter

2 tbsp. Bees Wax Granules

2 tbsp. Zinc (non Nano sized)
3 pumps of Alpha Lipoic A&E Oil

15 drops of Essential Oils

This is easy to make, girls. You can find good organic coconut oil anywhere these days. Order the bees wax, shea butter, and zinc from Amazon sources. Get the Alpha Lipoic A&E Oil from Hello Gorgeous, of course. As for the Essential Oils, you should buy them from www.smellandbehealed.com. It's important to buy only therapeutic grade since they will cross the blood brain barrier and get into your blood stream. They must be pure and authentic and not laced with fillers. I like to add lavender, peppermint, carrot seed, and purification.

In a double boiler, melt the bees wax granules and then add the CO and the shea butter until all melt together. Take off heat and rest on counter until room temperature. Wisk in Zinc Oxide and put in fridge for 45 minutes until soft and cool (not hard). Take out of fridge and add Alpha Lipoic A&E Oil and Essential Oils and whip together. Store in container of your choice.
