RECYCLING LOOKS FROM YEARS GONE BY

You have no doubt heard 'what goes around comes around' or 'what's old is new again.' Since I've been in the beauty business officially since the 80's I have seen a lot of beauty trends come and go and now come back again. I was speaking to a group of 300 women telling them about these very beauty trends a few weeks ago and thought you might like to hear about them too.

  1. BANGS - Bangs seem to recycle every 10 years. So Botox or bangs? Bangs can cover a multitude of sins and it is cheaper that injecting poison into your forehead. But not all faces were created equal, thank goodness. Some can wear bangs and even need them and some cannot. If you are like me and have a five-head (not a forehead), you need bangs. If your forehead only measures around 2 to 3 fingers, then they are not for you. Especially if your jawline is square or plump. You actually need as much skin showing as possible, to lengthen your face.  And one more thing, curly hair unfortunately does not make good bangs; hair needs to be fairly straight. Brazilian Blowouts can make this happen though!
  2. THE CAT EYE - No doubt you have seen this now on a regular basis, if you get much or look at magazines. I remember the black liquid eye liner of the 60's on my favorite stars like Bridget Bardot and Elizabeth Taylor. Remember when Liz was Cleopatra? Those were the days. Well, it's back with a vengeance. Not only black cat eyes, they come in an array of colors. Can you wear it? Maybe, if you have smooth eye lids and not much crows feet. OK, let's face it; this look is best on the young. You also have to have a steady hand to draw a perfect line across your lid just above lashes and then wing it up out past the corner of your eye. Not to mention doing it again on the other eye and making them match perfectly. It's exhausting just explaining it!
  3. RED LIPS - The 50's are back with beautiful red lips poised on beautiful porcelain skin. But not all reds are equal. You really need to have a color analysis to know for sure if you a blue-based red or a yellow-based red. I had a bride come in to show me her red lipstick that she wanted to wear with her snow white bridal gown. After the color analysis, we discovered her lipstick had too much blue in it. The right color red made an amazing difference and she was extremely happy. There's nothing like a great smile and beautiful red lips. There are two families of red: COOL REDS are berry and rose reds & WARM REDS are orange and brown reds.   Pink, olive, and reddish skin work best with cool reds & redheads, freckled, and golden skin are best with warm reds.
  4. BROWS ARE BACK - They are not necessarily the Brook Shield brows of the 70's but they are back. I'm having a little problem with some of them coming way to close in the middle of the face, making eyes look close set and causing some to look almost mad. Soooo, I recommend my strategy, which is to start them directly above the inner corner of the eye if your eyes are perfectly balanced (the width of one eye can fit between your eyes.)  If eyes are close set:  start them over the whites of your eye or leave them closer together above the nose if your eyes are wide set. Ask for my GET GORGEOUS GUIDE with drawings and instructions. You need to groom your brows, it is the beginning of your face. Keep them natural and don't let anyone wax, thread or pluck them too thin. If the hair is sparse, fill them in with a powder brush on. If they are thin, pencil them fuller. Use short strokes (not a solid line) and brush afterwards to blend.
  5. BLUE SHADOW - Yes the blue shadow of the 80's is back, may favorite makeup era. Yes shoulder pads and lots of eye shadow is on it's way back. And no, blue eye shadow is not for everyone, but on special occasions it can be fun. I really like blue shadow on blue and brown eyes, not green eyes. I often recommend dark blue liner for those who don't wear a lot of shadow, especially if eyelids are a little crepy.  Blue is back!
  6. FROM BRAIDS TO BUNS - The last few years the messy , fringy-braided look has been popular, but let's go back to the 50's and 60's where hair was neat and smooth. Hair knots and loops or classy buns are now the special occasion hair do. Think the classic chignon. Neat, clean, no fuss no muss.
  7. HEAD SCARVES - I love this 60's look, but it does not love me. Try them on before you buy. Check your profile: nose, forehead, chin, neck. If all that passes inspection, then tuck your ears in and wear it tight so it stays put.

HOPE YOU ENJOYED A WALK DOWN MEMORY LANE. HAVE A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A BLESSED NEW YEAR. MORE HEALTH AND BEAUTY TIPS WILL BE ON THERE WAY IN 2014. GET READY FOR A CHANGE FOR THE BETTER! LOVE YOU ALL!
