For many equestrians who juggle a full-time job along with their training and riding schedules, achieving the perfect balance can become a daunting task. For third-generation equine veterinarian Dr. Sara Bartholomew, staying committed to both her riding goals and clients' equine patients if of utmost importance- and, when riding in her Custom Saddlery saddle, achieving perfect balance in the show ring is easy.

Bartholomew operates her own practice, Capitol Equine Veterinary Services, and strives to educate all equestrians on preventative care and health care for their equine partners. Recently, Bartholomew competed in the Golden State Dressage Festival at the Murieta Equestrian Center in Rancho Murieta, California. At the show, she was honored with the Custom Saddlery Most Valuable Rider (MVR) Award for her commitment to promoting the wellbeing of horses and her cheerful sportsmanship attitude.

The Custom Saddlery MVR Award- presented by Custom Saddlery, the Official Saddle of the U.S. Dressage Team- honors select equestrians across the country who go above and beyond the standard in the sport of dressage. Custom Saddlery MVR winners earn top scores while showcasing superb horsemanship and excellent sportsmanship. Bartholomew received an embroidered saddle pad, towel, and ribbon from Custom Saddlery. Bartholomew was elated to win the MVR Award, especially as she rides in an Icon Coda Custom saddle herself. "I like the Icon Coda because you can feel a lot through the deep seat," she explained. "The seat is somewhat flexible, and provides great contact and closeness with the horse. My horse is not an easy mare to sit, but with the Coda, I sit her well."

Although not so easy to sit, her mare is excellent at turning heads at every dressage show she enters. Bartholomew and her own 10-year-old Gypsy Vanner mare, Peperooga's Parnoo Ori, known as 'Ori', rode to first place in their USDF Freestyle test at Third Level, and second place in the Third Level Test 2 at the Golden State Dressage Festival. Bartholomew trained and competed Ori for over a year, and throughout that time realized that the mare was the perfect equine partner for her. "I did not go out looking for a Gypsy Vanner horse to buy, but she just found me and I grew to love her. She is a super cool and talented mare that works really hard," said Bartholomew, who now owns Ori.

Bartholomew earned her USDF Bronze medal aboard Ori, who is trained through the Prix St. Georges, and is now working towards her goal of achieving her Silver medal. She was chosen to win the Custom Saddlery MVR Award at the Golden State Dressage Festival because of her obvious enthusiasm for dressage and outstanding sportsmanship attitude. "I love dressage because you can do it on any breed and still set your own goals," Bartholomew said. "I don't have a 10-scoring mover, but every time we show, we do something I'm proud of and have something to improve upon. I can be successful at my own level."

Bartholomew believes that in all competitions and day-to-day equestrian management, sportsmanship and horsemanship are key factors to long-term success. "We are all out here for the love of the horse at the end of the day," she stated. "It's not just about the competition, but about ourselves growing as individuals. Sportsmanship and camaraderie are the main reasons why competitors have fun and enjoy the show. Everything that we put into the sport is not solely about winning, but about the relationships that we build with people and with our horses."

Outside of the show ring, Bartholomew is in high demand with horses seeking her veterinary care. Even so, she always makes time for her Gypsy Vanner mare and Custom saddle. "I schedule my own ride times like I schedule veterinary appointments-it's the only way to fit everything in!" Bartholomew shared.

Custom Saddlery, based in Aiken, South Carolina, is proud to honor admirable riders like Bartholomew at dressage shows across the country.

SAVE THE DATE

2017 GVHS Annual Meeting held February 17-19th
at the Grand Oaks Resort in Weirsdale, FL!

GVHS member Lisa Savage from Newton, TX traveled with her Gypsy Vanners to attend the Silver Spurs All Breed Show at West Cal Arena in Sulphur, LA  April 2nd 2016. Lisa and her Gypsy Vanners were the only Vanner representatives in a large group of Louisiana Stock Horses.  Lisa's horsemanship along with the Vanner's beauty, training and temperament helped them to take home some well-deserved show ribbons.

Lisa's gelding Sterling, a classic Vanner Piebald did exceptionally well taking 1st in Hunter Under Saddle, 2nd in Disciplined Rail (command class), Hunt Seat Equitation and Open Hunter
Ground Poles; 3rd in Open Trail, and placing in Western Disciplined Rail, 5 & Over Geldings Halter , Senior Showmanship and Western Horsemanship.

MCF Red's Jenn Fizz, a 10 month old Red Roan Vanner filly, was terrific in her very first show.  She was calm and so well-behaved!  Jenn took 2nd place in Weanling/Yearling Mares and in her Showmanship class plus she WON In-hand Trail! What a great start to what will hopefully be an incredible show career.

Next show was the Spring Feathered Horse Classic for Lisa and her Gypsy Vanners in Verona, Mississippi amid dozens of other horses and GVHS members.  Sterling and Jenn had a jolly good time at the show at the end of April.

Lisa is quite proud of 10 month old filly, Jenn, for her performance and behavior at her first 'major' breed show!  She was calm and fearless even with all the hoopla that is part of being at a large show. Many nice compliments were given to Jenn!

Jenn placed 2nd in Amateur Color Solid or Blagdon just behind the glorious Miss Q and she was 3rd in Yearling Fillies, Open Color Solid or Blagdon and Amateur Ground Obstacles In Hand (beating Sterling!). She also placed in Amateur Mares All Ages, Dressage Suitability In Hand and Amateur Showmanship, Grooming and Conditioning and Open Ground Obstacles In Hand Ages 5 and under.

Six year old gelding Sterling placed 1st in Open Trail Under Saddle Horses 6 yrs & up and Amateur English Equitation W/T. He was 2nd in Hunter Under Saddle W/T and 3rd in Amateur Western Equitation W/J.   Sterling also placed in Open Ground Obstacles In Hand Ages 6+ , Ranch Riding, Amateur Ground Obstacles In Hand, Dressage Suitability under Saddle W/T, Amateur English Pleasure W/T and WT/WJ over Ground Poles.
