Equine Affaire's Versatile Horse & Rider Competition

Equine Affaire's hugely popular Versatile Horse & Rider Competition returned Friday the 14th of November to Equine Affaire in Massachusetts with a new twist. The Cosequin Versatile Horse & Rider Invitational featured ten of the top horse and rider combinations from past Versatile Horse & Rider Competitions. The Invitational was a timed and judged race through an obstacle course created to test communication between horse and rider as well as each competitor's horsemanship skills and athletic prowess. As the horse and rider teams raced through the course and worked through each obstacle they were judged on several horsemanship criteria as well as overall performance. Contestants competed for $6,250 in cash as well as other prizes!

Among this year's competitors were Gypsy Vanner Dungarvan Jackpot, ridden by Sherrye Johnson Trafton and owned by Kathleen Reed Dungarvan Feather in West Suffield, CT.

The course was constructed within the 95' x 200' parameters of the Eastern States Exposition's coliseum and featured numerous trail obstacles and riding challenges such as: jumping over obstacles, backing up through a pattern, pole bending or roll backs, various gymkhana games, working gates, riding over or through "spooky objects," gait/lead changes, flexing, working on the diagonal, etc.

For each obstacle, the two judges awarded performance points on a scale of 0-5 based on the horse's attitude, the rider's horsemanship, and the team's overall performance. Horses and riders were required to complete the course within a given time. Times were then translated into points, and points from each obstacle were totaled.

Dungarvan Jackpot went on to take a respectable 3rd Place WOWing the crowds of spectators and proving the extreme versatility and athleticism of the Gypsy Vanner Breed!

Congratulations Team Dungarvan!!!!

GVHS Evaluations @ Texas Feathered Horse Classic

For the last set of Evaluations this year, the GVHS coordinated with Gail Shrine to organize GVHS Evaluations at the Texas Feathered Horse Classic Show in Belton, TX.

The highlight of the Texas Evaluations was the horse Bandera Tiger Moth owned by Sherri Barnes of Texas. In a single day,  Tiger Moth completed all four Evaluations, Conformation- Movement, English- Under Saddle, Western- Under Saddle and Driving, scoring above 70% in all. This makes Bandera Tiger Moth just the second Gypsy Vanner Horse to achieve the Versatility Medallion of Honor and the first to do it in just ONE DAY.

Congratulations to Sherri Barnes, Bandera Tiger Moth and trainer Jackie Rollins, for this significant achievement!

USDF National Dressage Finals

This year there were two GVHS horses that qualified to attend the USDF National Dressage Finals, held November 6-9  at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, KY.

Peperooga's Parnoo Ori owned and ridden by Sara Bartholomew
of California qualified in Second Level Freestyle and Grey Ghost Phantom,
owned by Debbie Noonan of Florida and ridden by trainer, Heather Caudill
qualified in First Level Freestyle.   Unfortunately, due to the distance,
Sara & Ori were unable to attend the finals this year.

Heather & Phantom were the first to ride their First Level
Freestyle on the Sunday morning scoring an impressive 67.667% from the
three-Judge panel and ending in 12th place out of the 24 horses in the
competition.

During their time at the Horse Park, Phantom attracted the
attention of many visitors and the GVHS display helped to educate attendees
about the Gypsy Vanner breed.

Congratulations and thank you to all for demonstrating that the Gypsy Vanner
breed can be very competitive at the National level in the Dressage ring.
