The GVHS is currently seeking a special 'volunteer horse' for the purposes of this demonstration & seminar.

A Visible Horse demo horse must be white or light grey (the more white, the better), sound, gentle to work on, able to stand still during painting, and trained to lunge at walk, trot and canter. The horse must be a quiet, well-trained animal that is not disturbed by crowds. Good movement is desirable, but temperament and behavior are more important.

If you have a GVHS Registered Horse that may meet these criteria and you would be willing to assist GVHS with this important demo, please CONTACT US!

GVHS Futurity Results

The GVHS Futurity was held October 9th, 2013 during the Feathered Horse Fall Classic in Perry, GA.  Thank you Gail Shrine for  allowing us to fit this  important competition into your show schedule.  Thank you as well, to all owners who brought their Futurity nominated horses out to show in this competition!  While the numbers were small the judges remarked that the quality was impressive.

This year's payout to the winners totaled almost $3000.   The more who take part in the Futurity program, the higher the annual payouts!!  Don't forget that nominations are due by the end of 2013 to qualify your 2014 foals for Futurity eligibility.

The GVHS Evaluation Program

In 2013

The GVHS held Evaluations at five different venues in Florida, Ontario, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Michigan to conduct a total of 96 individual Evaluations including 80 for Conformation/Movement and the balance in the performance areas, English, Western and Driving.

The Conformation- Movement Evaluations are to be used to identify the strengths and weaknesses in a particular horse. For this Evaluation the Evaluators utilize a scoresheet to review and score well over fifty particular areas of the conformation they are analyzing, strictly based against the Breed Standard.  One of the most important uses for this tool is to take the score sheets and use those to make intelligent breeding decisions.  For example if you have identified that your stallion scores a little lower in his croup area you may consider avoiding breeding that stallion to a mare that also scores lower on that area.

The GVHS Evaluators are independent and experienced equine professionals.  They have all attended extensive training sessions particular to the Gypsy Vanner Horse Breed Standard including both classroom and hands on work with horses.   They are not giving opinions, but sharing their detailed knowledge of how to analyze and look at the conformation of your horse scored against the breed standard. This is something any horse owner can benefit from, but especially those involved in breeding.

To see the breakdown of detailed information you would receive feedback on in an Evaluation you can view the Evaluation scoresheets online at the GVHS website at

http://vanners.org/about-the-breed/evaluation-program/
...scroll to the bottom of the page.

Also, plan to attend the upcoming Annual Meeting, February 21-23, 2014 at the Georgia International Horse Park.  On Saturday our team of GVHS Evaluators will be  conducting a seminar to explain the Evaluation process and inform owners how to prepare themselves and their horses for Evaluation.  On the Sunday, we will be conducting the actual Evaluations.

Watch for news of 2014 Evaluation dates and locations in upcoming editions of The Vanner Banner.
