Regular term insurance is often used for Buy-Sell and Key Person related sales.  Your business clients should instead consider Return of Premium term.  Here's why: binocs

 

Using a M-45 Preferred Best NTU as an example, $1 million of regular 30 year term costs $1,895 annually.  Over the course of 30 years the company would spend $56,850 with no way to recapture cost.

 

A 30 year level Return of Premium term product costs $4,385 annually.  At the end of 30 years the company (or key employee as a golden handcuff) gets back 100% of premiums paid - $131,550 - guaranteed and tax free.

 

The biggest objection you'll get?  "The cost is so much more than a regular term product."  Your rebuttal to them is, "Who cares?  The company is paying the premium, and they are only out the time-use of the money."  Most business cases are not cash-flow sales. 

 

And, take it one step further assuming a 35% tax bracket.  The cost difference between the two plans is $2,490 per year.  Your client would have to invest that $2,490 each year and get a guaranteed return of 5.9% each year to generate the same $131,550 guaranteed Return of Premium he'll get back at the end of 30 years.  Where can he get 5.9% guaranteed for 30 years?  It's simple...he can't.
