Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

 

COPD is a progressive disease that makes it hard to breath. Cigarette smoking is the leading cause of COPD. Most people with COPD smoke, or used to smoke. Long term exposure to other irritants - pollution, chemical fumes, dust - may also contribute.

 

In COPD, less air flows in and out of the lung's bronchial tubes because the thousands of smaller bronchioles within the tubes have air sacs that have been damaged or destroyed, or the tubes themselves are inflamed.

 

Underwriting is largely dependent on whether or not the proposed insured currently smokes or not, and the results of his or her pulmonary function tests for the past few years.

When your clients think about retirement it's common for them to think about a Roth IRA.  They like the idea that the cash value accumulates tax-free, and when they retire the income will be tax-free.Success
  
But, you might consider suggesting that they also look at the Roth IRA "alternative"...life insurance.  Contributions into either are non-deductible, they both grow tax-deferred, they both have tax-free distributions, proceeds of both can be left income tax free to beneficiaries, but unlike a Roth IRA, a life insurance policy has the following advantages:
  • No limits on contributions (within guideline premium limits)
  • Early distributions without tax penalties
  • Creates an immediate estate upon premature death
