AUGUST 2014
Why Preschool Matters

Studies show that children who attend a quality preschool feel a greater sense of confidence to question, discover and wonder, giving them a better foundation for success in school and life.
  • Preschool helps children to gain independence and increase their self-esteem.
  • Children who attend preschool have improved academic achievement in school.
  • Attending preschool significantly reduces the need for special education, remedial classes or repeating grades.

Ready for School can help parents find the right preschool for their child.  Our community has free and reduced-fee options for families who qualify. If you have or know a three or four year old child that lives in Holland, Zeeland or Hamilton,  and would like more information or assistance, please call us at (616) 834-0515 or email us at info@readyforschool.org

Kinder Camp

The magic of exploration and learning was captured during this summer's Kinder Camp at elementary schools in Hamilton, Holland and Zeeland. Kinder Campers had an adventurous, dynamic, fun-filled 3-day Kindergarten orientation designed to help children feel comfortable and confident in adjusting to a new environment as they enter school this fall.

The daily Kinder Camp schedule affords children the opportunity to become acquainted with their school environment without having to share the building or playground with older students.  For some children the separation that occurs as they enter school can be difficult.  With the Kinder Camp experience, some of these issues can be diminished.

Educators from the Outdoor Discovery Center provided engaging nature-based outdoor activities while the classroom teacher is able to make observations, teach daily procedures (lining up, using the bathroom, playground safety, lunchroom procedures, etc.) and gain some insight into a child's readiness.

Each day parents received a Kinder Camp Connections newsletter updating them as to what their child did at school that day.  This gave parents and their child(ren) an opportunity to talk with him/her about what they learned and giving them the opportunity to reinforce any procedures or concepts they were taught.

Kinder Camp is partnership of Ready for School, Hamilton, Holland, Zeeland Schools and the Outdoor Discovery Center.

Mead Johnson Helps Kids Start School Ready

Children in the Ready for School  pre-kindergarten "Start School Ready" pilot program received a surprise visit on the last day of class Friday, August 15th.

Mead Johnson Nutrition's leadership team dropped off personalized backpacks with new clothing and school supplies for each child.  Mead Johnson Project Coordinator, Pam VanVliet said, "We wanted to get them more than just pencils and notebooks."

Teams had the name of a child and a list of items to help make that child's first day of school a great one.  Meijer's donated to assist Mead Johnson in  purchasing pens, pencils, shirts, shoes and all sorts of items that a child needs for school.

Mead Johnson Plant Manager, Emily Oberlee said, "It was nice to have the child's name and clothing sizes, because it made the experience of giving back more personal."
