Find a Church

Faith not fear
With great anticipation we are looking towards the 500th anniversary of the protestant reformation. There are a number of events and resources to help us mark the occasion:
  • Join Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton on Thursday, October 27, from 8-9 pm EST for a live webcast that will explore ecumenical and interreligious witness on the eve of the Reformation anniversary. American Lutheran religious scholar, Martin Marty, and other great panelists will be joining us for this discussion. Learn more here.
  • On October 31, we will begin our own synodical commemorations of the reformation anniversary by joining the Catholic Archdiocese of New York for a Reformation 500 Kick Off Event. Hosted at the Sheen Center and Old Saint Patrick's Church, there will be opportunity to watch the joint ecumenical commemoration between the Lutheran World Federation and the Catholic Church live from Sweden before worshiping together and joining for a reception. All are welcome at this event and we hope you will join us. Learn more here.
  • We have created a Reformation 500 blog that will over time help you to find resources and connect with ideas. The first blog is from Bishop Rimbo about the language we use and why. Read the post here.
It matters that the church is involved
The ELCA Task Force on Women and Justice is calling us into conversation with "Faith, Sexism, Justice: Conversations toward a Social Statement." Released this past summer, this study guide for individuals, congregations, and groups is the next step in the process of creating a social statement. It is a guide that looks at the many intersections of women in society and how economics, education, race, violence, and sexism contribute to our understanding of God's justice in our world. We talked to two women from our own synod that are involved in this work. Read more in the recent News Feature
Out and About

Synod Council
In the midst of our Synod Council's annual retreat this past weekend, there was a short business meeting. The Bishop's report included recommendations for calls by the Synod Council and roster transitions. Appointments were announced to the Pastors Compensation Guideline Task Force, Capital Improvement Grant Review Team, Assembly Planning Committee, Financial Management Committee, and the Disaster Response Task Force. The Synod Council has joined the synod staff, Executive Committee, Strategy Chairs and committees, and Deans in the listening phase of our strategic plan refresh. The council thanked and acknowledged the work of the outgoing chair of Gathered, Rev. William Baum, and approved the appointment of Ms. Hazel Goldstein as the new chair.
The Council approved the Capital Improvement Challenge Grants recommended by the review team. After notification has been made in early November, these grants will be announced in our Eletter and website. The council reviewed the Pastors' Compensation Guidelines and talked about best practices for congregations to enact these guidelines. The guidelines and additional resources will be made available on or before November 4.

Welcome Event
Each year Bishop Rimbo and staff host a gathering for those who are new to our synod as interns, rostered leaders and pastoral leaders. We spent time describing the work of our synod, our strategic plan and initiatives, and staff roles. We also give a brief overview of the things leaders will need to be attentive to from administrative matters to continuing education to personal wellbeing. It is also a great opportunity for leaders to meet each other make connections. This year we had 19 leaders new to the synod attend!
