Holiday Happenings

Holiday Open House at Parrot University Budgie Holiday

Mark your calendar for Parrot University's Holiday Open House, to be held on Saturday, December 6, from 10 am to 4 pm. Please join us for some holiday cheer with your favorite feathered friends and take advantage of Parrot University's special end of year sale. It's the perfect time to do some holiday shopping for your feathered family member and to participate in CPR's Holiday Parrot Tree (our version of an angel tree).

Light refreshments will be served and be sure to come back on Sunday, December 7, to attend Parrot 101 and Positive Reinforcement Training classes. Hope to see everyone there!

Holiday Parrot Tree

If you're like most parrot owners, your fids (feathered kids) receive gifts during the holiday season. For the birds awaiting adoption from Companion Parrots Re-homed, the gifts they receive through the Parrot Tree at Parrot University will be the only ones they receive. The Parrot Tree is a way for donors to contribute or purchase items that the birds need and want. To participate, pick your special parrot from the tree and then make your donation or purchase. If you believe every bird deserves a Happy Holiday, this is a wonderful opportunity to help!

Season of Giving

Please consider a year-end, 100% tax deductible gift to help the birds of CPR. Your gift in any amount will help save homeless parrots.

We are so thankful to all of our supporters. We would not be here without you. Your donations are vital to helping us continue our work. Please keep homeless parrots in your heart this holiday season. You can make a secure donation by credit card or print the mail-in donation form.

Cockatiel
Sassy, Cockatiel
Species: Cockatiel

Age: unknown

Do you have room in your heart and your home for a curious Cockatiel that just loves to whistle duets? Sassy will make a great pet for almost anyone -- from a new bird owner, to someone who lives in an apartment or condo, or an older person looking for a companion. Stop by and whistle with her!

Watch Sassy's video and come meet her.

Emma Jane: Featured Bird for November

Blue-front Amazon
Emma Jane, Blue-front Amazon
Species:  Blue-front Amazon

Age: Unknown

Despite having a girl's name, our Emma Jane is actually a male -- and a stunningly handsome one! Emma Jane will do best as the only bird in a home. He says a few words, has learned a number of new behaviors and will graciously allow his favorite people to give him a head skritch and feed him treats. And if you accidentally call him a girl, he won't even hold a grudge!

Jack & Jill: Featured Birds for November

Meet Jack & Jill

Blue & Gold Macaws
Jack & Jill Entertaining Wilson from Fox News Rising
Species

Age: Estimated to be in their 40's

This "old married couple" has been called by a variety of names, including Fred and Ethel. They were seized by authorities a few years ago and are looking for their retirement home. Both of them talk a bit and we often hear, "Group hug!" Jill readily steps up and Jack is trying so-o-o-o hard. We know he'll get there one of these days. Check out the serious conversation they're having with their buddy Wilson from Fox News Rising in the photo. These guys need to be housed together in one cage and there is only one adoption fee for both of them. Wouldn't you like to take them home for the holidays?

Bird Bathing
Beaker's Bathtime Bliss

The theme for the 2015 CPR calendar is 'Favorite Things'. Food, toys, head skritches and people were the top winners. One of the most entertaining to photograph was bath time. We also had birds that liked to steal credit cards from purses, smell toes, hurl spoons off the kitchen counter, hang upside down and train! Grab your calendar while supplies last, and pick up a couple for your friends, too! Just $15 each at Parrot U or email info@companionparrots.org  to order ($3.00 shipping).

Tip of the Month: Recycled Corks

By Lynda Rettew

In Memory of JJ

Does your bird love to chew on corks? Do you recycle from wine bottles? Recently my African Grey, JJ, developed a serious crop infection. During one of several trips to see Dr. Powers, I asked if recycled wine corks could have possibly caused her bacterial infection.

Her answer stunned me. The concern is, that if the cork had come in contact with any foil, that it could contain lead! I immediately pulled one from her cage and threw all of the others away.

I ordered some unused wine corks, which JJ enjoyed very much for a time. Her test for lead turned out negative, but sadly, her other health issues became more serious, and we lost her on October 29th.

Sometimes serious danger exists where we least expect it. Please, always be vigilant.

Classroom

Take Advantage of Our Training Classes

Did you know that CPR offers two free training classes? These classes are specifically designed to help you and your parrots succeed.

'Positive Reinforcement Training' is our basic class. We explore the science of behavior -- why all living things learn, how to manipulate the environment in our home to make the right behavior easier, how to choose a reinforcer your bird will happily work for, and lots more.

'What's in Your Toolbox: Strategies for Problem-Solving' is our advanced class. It is limited to six people and Positive Reinforcement is a pre-requisite. Each participant brings in one problem behavior that they are experiencing with their bird. During class, we explore how to change what precedes and follows that behavior. We also look at the purpose of the behavior and what we can replace it with.

If you've ever thought that there's nothing you can do about undesirable behavior, such as screaming or biting, I challenge you to take these classes. I promise that you will have a new outlook. Recently, one person went home from Positive Reinforcement class and returned the next day to announce that she "had her wonderful bird back again!" This science is good stuff!
