News From The Birdhouse
| |
By Leslie Wieser
As Parrot University prepares for the transition to Companion Parrots Re-homed, the CPR Board of Directors is hard at work reviewing and strengthening its operations. When you visit, you may notice a greater board member presence as they learn the day to day functions. No need to worry...there are no major changes planned and you can count on the same friendly staff, the same high quality merchandise and

the same operating hours.
CPR is also seeking to broaden its base of volunteers to assist with quarantining birds, helping out at the store and working at special events, both in and out of store. If you are interested in volunteering, please let us know.
And as we transition, financial support from the community will be more important than ever. Every dollar helps, no matter how small.
Thank you for your continued support.

Special Event: The Secret of Animal Training
by Debbie Foster
| Chris Jenkins, Natural Encounters, Inc. |
Don't miss this educational event and Companion Parrots Re-homed fundraiser.
Chris Jenkins, a senior manager at Natural Encounters Inc., will be speaking on The SECRET of animal training. Chris holds a degree in psychology and has worked at the Sacramento Zoo and as an educator for 'The Animal Guys'. Since 2005, he's been a trainer and supervisor for two well-known flighted bird shows and a training instructor for NEI's companion parrot and professional programs. He also presents and consults around the country. Chris is a member of ABMA (Animal Behavior Management Alliance) and IAATE (International Association of Avian Trainers and Educators) and has been certified as a professional bird trainer (CPBT-KA) by the International Avian Trainers Certification Board.
In addition to learning The SECRET, you'll get to see Chris in action with some birds in the CPR program!
This event will be held on Saturday, September 20, at Parrot University. For your convenience, we've scheduled a morning session (9 am to noon) and an afternoon session (2 - 5 pm). Tickets are a real bargain at only $30 and are limited due to space. Call today to reserve your seat!

We always say education is the key. That's why I encourage you to take advantage of this fantastic educational event. I can personally vouch that the Natural Encounters, Inc. staff are all amazingly gifted trainers and educators.

Mrs. Spinney: Featured Birds for August
| Mrs. Spinney, Meyer's Parrot |
Meet Mrs. Spinney
Species: Meyer's Parrot
Age: 11
Just imagine walking past a bird's cage and hearing, "Did you pee?". Quite a few people skid to a stop to find out who asked that! Mrs. Spinney is a little bird with a tiny voice. And she does have a lot to say, although we can't always understand her. Mrs. Spinney is a playful bird who is also quiet enough to live in an apartment or condo.
Watch Mrs. Spinney's video and come meet her.

Pandora: Featured Bird for August
| Pandora, Congo African Grey |
Meet Pandora
Species: Congo African Grey
Age: 15
This is another one of those birds that has us shaking our heads in amazement and keeps us laughing. Besides the most pitiful little meow you've ever heard, Pandora does a really great train imitation. But don't take our word for it -- check out the video and come meet her. Pandora is a nicely socialized "grey girl" who will be a great companion.
Watch Pandora's video.

Sunny: Featured Bird for August
| Sunny, Rose-breasted Cockatoo |
Meet Sunny
Species: Rose-breasted Cockatoo
Age: 10
Sunny is a gorgeous Rose-breasted Cockatoo. You can surely see how they got their name! This 10 year old male was shy at first, but is starting to talk a bit more, and he sometimes surprises us. Sunny really likes to hang out with the other guys. Come meet Sunny to see if you might be part of his flock.

Companion Parrots Re-homed would like to thank all of our donors for their generosity. Whether contributions come through the monthly supporter program, the Justice Perch, or from spare change in the donation jar, every dollar goes toward caring for the birds.
For those that can't make a monetary contribution right now but want to help, we also accept donated items in good condition that can be resold or used for raffles.
Donations make it possible for CPR to fulfill its mission. Thank you, donors, for your support!

Tip of the Month: Predatory Drift
By Lynda Rettew
| Even the most gentle dog has predatory instincts. |
Do you believe that it's safe for your parrot to play with your dog (or cat), because you KNOW just how gentle your dog is? The answer is that it is truly not safe. Predatory drift can occur with any dog, even if the dog has never shown aggression.
Predatory drift, from the hard-wired instinct to hunt for food, can take over in a flash. It can be triggered by something seemingly insignificant, such as a shriek, or a hop, or flight.
If you watch dogs at play, you can observe the progression from stare to stalk, chase, nip, grab and shake. Suddenly and unpredictably, this can progress to killing.
Some dog breeds are "safer" around birds, but none are truly safe. Even the most gentle dog, who's never shown any hunting instinct, can switch instantly. All dogs, even those who are not natural hunters, share the same survival DNA as their wolf cousins.
So please keep your bird safe - it's your job.

| |
By Lindsay Boardman
| Harrison's Bird Bread cake was a big hit among all of the parrots! |
Thanks to everyone who made it down to Parrot University to help celebrate Bosley's Birthday on July 26. It was a great time and the raffle prize ticket sales brought in record revenues, all of which go directly to the care of the parrots. Congratulations to all winners and thank you for your support!
Special thanks go to all of our fabulous volunteers including Debbie and Tom Cassutt, Stephen Platte, Linda Dowdle, Judy Elkins, Earl Harding, Jim Burke, Jennifer Drummond, MacKenzie Drummond, Sarah Coats, Abby Coats, Caroline Stott, Connie Thompson, Jonathan Keene, Will Dunlap and Beth Dunlap. Thank you for all of your help -- we couldn't have done it without you.
At the same time that we're winding down from Bos' party, we're gearing up for several more exciting events this Fall -- We hope you'll join us for both 'The Secret of Animal Training' and 'Feathers Friends & FUNds.'
