Changes at Parrot U and CPR
| |
by Karen Justice, CPR Founder

As many of you know, I recently announced that I will be retiring from CPR and Parrot U at the end of September, 2014. While this was a very difficult decision for me, I am extremely excited about my new role. Education is the key to the success of parrots living as companion birds and my focus going forward will be on teaching classes and recruiting adoption homes for all the wonderful birds we are able to assist.
I will also be participating in fundraising efforts for CPR. For the past eight years, Parrot University has funded the housing and care for the birds of CPR. My husband and I have contributed financially to maintain this support. After the transfer of Parrot University's ownership to the non-profit organization, CPR will need to raise funds to make up for the shortfall that the retail sales do not meet. So now, more than ever, it will be critical for all of our supporters to shop at Parrot University in order to achieve our goals.
Please know that I am not going anywhere. CPR has always been, and always will be, my passion. I will be available to assist in the transition for as long as needed, plus I plan to serve in an advisory capacity to the board. But teaching is where my heart is and I cannot wait to be able to devote more time to education.

Mumford & Grover: Featured Birds for April
Species: Lovebirds
Age: 5 and 8 years
This delightful pair has rejoined us due to egg-laying in their adoptive home. Mumford, the male, is extremely friendly and loves to hang out on your shoulder and beak-surf your face. If Grover is feeling friendly she will fly to you and join Mumford. We will work with a new home to try and reduce the egg-laying. Watch their video and come meet this charming pair.
See Grover & Mumford's video here.

Atlas: Featured Bird for April
Meet Atlas
Age: approx. 3 years
Atlas is the victim of well-intentioned, but misguided, gift giving. After two homes he has joined CPR. A very friendly conure, he has enjoyed training in his foster home and is eagerly awaiting a new home to continue his education. As many Jendays do, Atlas enjoys vocalizing.
|
Lola: Featured Bird for April
Meet Lola
Age: 12
Lola is a female Eclectus with a preference for men. Very shy when she first joined us, she has come out of her shell through positive reinforcement training. She has a limited human vocabulary, but has picked up several things she has heard in the "Big Bird Room." Come meet Lola.

Tip of the Month: Get your Parrot to Eat a Carrot
| |
by Lindsay Boardman
| Andy enjoys his fresh food breakfast |
Feeding your parrot good food is one of the most important ways to take care of him. A healthy diet promotes longevity, prevents disease, and gives your parrot the energy he needs to be himself. We recommend your bird's diet consist of a high quality pellet food such as Harrison's or Roudybush supplemented with fresh and cooked foods (fruits, vegetables, grains). Nuts and seeds should be served sparingly as treats. (Budgies and cockatiels require a 50/50 ratio of seed to pellets.)
Use common sense when feeding fresh foods. Generally, what's good for us is good for them with a few exceptions. Absolutely no alcohol, chocolate, avocado, or caffeine. To learn more about working your parrot towards a healthy diet, check out the free Food Class on May 18th at 2pm. And, as always, stop by Parrot University with specific questions.

Volunteer Corner: Can You Help?

| Bank of America Pet Adoption Event |
Kristen Haynes answered a request in our volunteer email from a student who was putting together an event as a class project at a nursing home. She visited with her gorgeous Cockatoo, Eureka, at Peak Resources in Gastonia. This is one of those events where we are unlikely to get new adoptive homes but do get good positive PR for our mission. Thank you, Kristen and Eureka, for representing us.
On April 6, we had volunteers representing CPR at Discovery Place for the 'Bird Lore and More' event. Many thanks to Taffy and Michael Graziadei, Haley Price, Jim Alexander, and Stephen Platte.
Debbie Foster, Connie Thompson, Jennifer Drummond, and I represented CPR at the Bank of America employees' animal adoption event, Paws and Claws, on April 10. We always enjoy this well-organized event and meeting new people. Thank you, Diane Keith, event organizer, for allowing us to attend again.
CPR is an all volunteer organization and we need your help. Please email Lynda at volunteer@CompanionParrots.org if you're able to spare some time to help the CPR parrots find Forever Homes.
