SEPTEMBER 2013

Barbara Heidenreich Worskshop

by Karen Cheek Justice

Barbara Heidenreich with Bosley
Barbara Heidenreich with Bosley

If you did not attend our weekend event with Barbara Heidenreich, you REALLY missed out!  Just ask the attendees.  Barbara's presentation on Saturday was both educational and entertaining.  Due to her exceptional skills, Barbara has experienced so many wonderful training opportunities with a wide range of creatures all over the world.  Barbara shared video footage of both adding behaviors to an animal's repertoire and removing unwanted behaviors through an alternative one.  It was so fascinating to see the quality of the "trainees" lives improve right before our eyes!

Of course, none has been as challenging as working with Ms. Bos!  (Just kidding, Barbara!)  While we find Bosley's antics and tricks we have taught as funny and smart we quickly learned that we had made a lot of mistakes.  Barbara showed us that we have unwittingly encouraged and rewarded escalated energy and aggression.  When Barbara attempted to work with her, Bosley threw out all the things her admiring fans enjoy and reward, but Barbara found that inappropriate.  Ms.

Bos was one frustrated girl when Barbara did not respond unless it was low-key, non-aggressive body language.  A HUGE lesson was learned!

Learning to Step Up
Learning to Step Up

The Sunday workshops brought mixed success but many participants experienced

major training breakthroughs with their birds.  Some of the birds were just too unsettled by being in a strange place surrounded by strange birds and people.  Others settled in and were very motivated to train.  Congratulations to everyone who experienced success.  We hope those with less such success gleaned information from others' work.

Our heartfelt thanks to Barbara for such a successful weekend.  I also wish to thank our sponsors, Animal Care Hospital of Matthews and Carolina Veterinary Specialists.  And last, but not least, all of you who attended.  We appreciate your support of our endeavors to bring the best and most current behavioral information to you.

Meet Fiona

Species: Parrotlet

Age: 7

Fiona is a feisty female Parrotlet that has been with us for two years.  Although she is very territorial about her cage, she has been trained to come on a table top perch.  Once away from it she is a delightful little girl that loves to hang out with you.  She has just returned from "summer camp" where a volunteer took her home to enjoy time on a screened in porch with her own "pool" and special treats.

 Watch Fiona's video!

 Meet Jake

Species:
Catalina Macaw

Age: 19

Jake is a BIG personality in a BIG body.  He definitely prefers men.  Unfortunately he likes to wander so we have to keep him in his cage unless someone is available to keep an eye on him. He is a "man-made" cross between a Scarlet and Blue & Gold Macaw.   A very beautiful bird, Jake will need an experienced home.

 Meet Asher

Species: Timneh African Grey

Age: 3

Asher is a three year old male Timneh African Grey.  Joining us a few months ago when his mom entered the military, he has settled in and is enjoying all the attention he receives.  Asher is handsome, talkative and friendly but can be a little unpredictable.  Barbara Heidenreich worked with him briefly and commented on how fast his reactions are.

Happy Ending: Petri

Below is a letter received from Petri's adoptive family.  We are so pleased to share this Happy Ending update with you!
Petri and her birthday cake
Birdie Birthday Cake!

Hi Karen, Lea and Gang!

We celebrated Petri's 1st birthday today!  Beka made Petri a special cake of cornbread, carrots and watermelon!

Beka is a good mom, and Petri is a hilarious, wonderful addition to our family!  She is thriving, and she thinks she runs the household.

Tip of the Month:  Newsprint Makes the Best Cage Liner
by Lindsay Boardman

Newspapers make better cage liners than wood chips, corn kernels, or kitty litter any day.  They are easy to change daily without a giant mess and are less expensive. Newsprint also allows you to better monitor your bird's droppings for abnormalities, which can sometimes be the first sign of illness. The loose liner types give the illusion of cleanliness but actually hold urine and fecal moisture for long periods of time giving bacteria and fungus a place to grow.  This fungus and bacteria can become an airborne health hazard if not removed promptly.

Newspapers
Newspapers are cheap cage liners and make daily clean-up easy.

Keeping your parrot's cage clean is one of the very best things you can do for him. Patrolling for poop around the house and in the cage is essential for the bird's general well-being and for keeping a healthy home.

Note:  Newspaper is the only cage liner used at Parrot University and, as you might imagine, we use a lot of it!  If you'd like to donate papers for the CPR birdcages, please deliver them to Parrot U.  To help the Parrot U staff and CPR volunteers keep organized, we kindly ask that clean newspapers come neatly stacked with ads removed.

Blue and Gold Macaw on One of Mike's Perches

Mike Foster has spent untold hours making perches for Companion Parrots Re-homed.  Any of the small ones made of PVC that you find at Parrot University are ones he made for us.  Then he took on a bigger project - making all the pieces for the large floor stand PVC perches needed for the Heidenreich event.  I heard somewhere how many cuts he made - it was thousands.

I also overheard someone ask his wife, Debbie Foster, if he had a workshop for all this work.  She replied, "Yes, it's called the garage."  Here you see a picture of Mike surrounded by some of the pieces in his "workshop."

Mike, this was a big job and we are all extremely grateful for the work you did.  A huge thank you back to you.  It benefits the birds for their training experiences, and it benefits CPR for the income to help our expenses.

Now we will all hope that Debbie doesn't come up with any new projects for you in the near future so you can actually work on things you want to do for yourself!

Nido Adoptivo
Nido Project Chicks

For several years I have sponsored two nest boxes through Bird Endowment, a non-profit organization dedicated to saving the Blue-throated Macaws in Bolivia.  While my boxes have been used each year I've never had Blue-throats in them until this breeding season.  The box I sponsor in memory of my beloved African Grey, Cheeko, fledged TWO chicks!  Aren't they adorable?

If ever there has been a program "about the birds" it is this one.  Never has there been such a successful grass-roots campaign to raise awareness of the plight of an endangered species in its native homeland.  For more information about this program please go to www.birdendowment.org.

Bosley's Big Birdie Birthday Bash 2013

Thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate

Thanks Val!

Bosley's Big Birdie Birthday bash with us on July 27th. The event was a great success and we hope everybody had a good time. We're sure that Bosley had the most fun of everyone.  She made it clear that she knew the party was hers as soon she saw the store being decorated!

A big thanks to those of you who bought a t-shirt, raffle ticket, or made a special donation. All of the money raised helps deserving parrots find loving adoptive homes through our program.

The volunteers who helped out were amazing. Thanks to Stephen Platte and Tom and Debbie Cassutt for selling the raffle tickets; to Debbie Foster for designing the Bosley t's and coordinating the training demonstrations; to Lynda Rettew for working the front desk; to Connie Thompson, Leslie Wieser, and Will and Beth Dunlap for helping keep the parrots safe in the crowd; to Val Vajay for looking fabulous in the parrot suit; and a huge thank you to Lea Waller for coordinating everything! Lots of work goes in to an event like this one and everyone's passion for the cause really shines through.
