Norovirus in the news!

There has been a suspected outbreak of Norovirus in the local area.  Here are a few reminders to help keep your family healthy.

Noroviruses are a group of related viruses that cause inflammation of the stomach and intestines.

Symptoms spread quickly and can include:
  • cramping
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • diarrhea
Norovirus is very contagious and is spread by:
  • Eating food or drinking liquids that are contaminated with norovirus
  • Touching surfaces or objects with norovirus on them and then putting your hand or fingers in your mouth
  • Having direct contact with a person who is infected with norovirus
One is contagious as soon as symptoms start and up to 2 days after symptoms resolve.

Protect Yourself!
  • Wash your Hands - alcohol based hand sanitizers are not as effective against Norovirus.  Better than nothing but wash your hands with soap and water if there is an option.
  • Disinfect - After throwing up or having diarrhea, immediately clean and disinfect contaminated surfaces using a bleach-based household cleaner
  • Do not prepare food while infected
  • Wash Laundry - Immediately remove and wash clothing or linens that may be contaminated with vomit or stool. Handle soiled items carefully-try not to shake them -to avoid spreading virus. If available, wear disposable gloves while handling soiled clothing or linens and wash your hands after handling.
The biggest complication from Norovirus is dehydration.  Visit our Acute Illness Guide for more information on symptoms management.
