Shanice's story: Invest in a teen and change a family

As Shanice will tell you in her "elevator speech" on Make A Difference - Wisconsin, investing in one teen brings returns for a whole family. Shanice, a junior at Washington High School, shared the financial and business world foundations she said she gained as a student in the Make A Difference Money Coach program during a Donor Appreciation event Sept. 30 at Miller Park. Shanice particularly appreciated the part of Money Coach that covered interviews, resumes and an "elevator speech," all taught by volunteer Ranell Washington, a Washington H.S. alum. Shanice has used those skills in her first job search and also shared the advice with her mother, who was looking for a new career. "When my mom had an interview, she told me she thought about what I told her. And she ended up getting the job." Shanice was one of a group of students at the event from Milwaukee Public Schools who shared their unique Make A Difference stories and successes.
Make A Difference - Wisconsin has been proud to partner with MPS since our inception and we were honored to have Superintendent Dr. Darienne Driver join the event and give her impassioned thoughts on the importance of teen financial education and community support. Dr. Driver said she was struck by the power of students who shared financial knowledge with their peers and parents. "You can never underestimate the power of a single action," said Dr. Driver. "Our future really is now, right in front of us, in how [these students] share their experiences with their families."

If you are interested in volunteering but missed the in-person training session, please consider attending one of our upcoming Volunteer Training Webinars, October 15th or November 7th. Big ideas: Advisory Council brainstorms on our future
Every year, I find it refreshing to hear the creative and "big picture" thoughts from our Advisory Council. It's a special group of Make A Difference - Wisconsin supporters, some of whom have backed our founder Lloyd Levin's mission of money smart teens since the very beginning. As was evident in our Sept. 30 annual meeting at Miller Park, Advisory Council members continue to bring compassionate, thought-provoking ideas on expanding the organization. I look forward to seeing ideas from Advisory Council members become a reality in the coming year. Their contributions are distinct and vital to our shared mission of providing financial literacy to every teen in Wisconsin. -Brenda Campbell, President & CEO, Make A Difference - Wisconsin
