Background on National Service and HOME

CNCS is the federal agency that oversees programs like AmeriCorps and Habitat has been a partner organization since that program began in 1994.
Greater Fox Cities Habitat for Humanity has had nearly 20 AmeriCorps VISTAs and National members serving in all areas from the Habitat ReStore, to construction services, volunteer services and more. Three Habitat staff members are alums of AmeriCorps programming; two that served with us as VISTAs!

HOME is the short name for the HOME Investment Partnerships Program, which funds families most in need of assistance across the country. The HOME program provides grants to state and local governments to support affordable housing. Those grants are then provided to organizations, like Habitat, not only to cover land and other expenses but to leverage the funds to raise even more money for housing work.

Dear Friends of Habitat for Humanity,

We are hearing that Congressional appropriators (the members who make decisions about the federal budget) are considering cutting funding in the final fiscal year 16 budget for two programs that are critical to Habitat's ability to serve partner families around the country:  National Service and HOME.

Please take action to support these programs today and continue to do so throughout the week.

The cuts to funding for the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) could be at least 20%, and it is still unclear how much funding HOME will receive after the 93% cut the Senate proposed back in June.

Why do these decisions matter to Habitat?

A 20% cut to CNCS would eliminate 20,000 AmeriCorps State and National positions nationwide, including many that could serve Habitat affiliates, and it would downsize the AmeriCorps VISTA program which supports the capacity of many affiliates.

Regarding HOME, we don't need to tell you what a 93 percent cut to HOME would mean; a program cut by 93 percent is essentially eliminated.

Put simply, these proposed cuts would be devastating to two very important programs integral to Habitat's work and mission.
