Greetings!

It's time for school conferences in many districts!  Read the article below to help you prepare for conferences and ask the right questions about the use of student data in schools.

If your student is struggling, improving study skills can help! Knowledge Edge will be offering study skills in small groups on Wednesday nights for 1 hour--two sessions will be run, one for middle school, one for high school.  Call for more info!

We will offer a FREE practice ACT test on Saturday, November 16. This is a great chance for students to get a baseline score on the test and begin to plan when they want to prepare to take the actual test.  Students should allow 10-14 weeks before the test to fit in prep sessions.

Let us know how we can help your students!

HAVE A PLAN FOR TAKING THE ACT OR SAT

Now that the school year is well underway, many high school juniors are looking ahead to visiting schools this winter and spring. But when is the best time to take the ACT or SAT test?  Considerations:
  •  Preparing for and taking the test during a sports season can put a lot of pressure on a student.  Think about scheduling prep and the test before or after a season concludes.
  • Is the test date you're looking at during Spring Break? The Spring ACT is April 12, the beginning of Spring Break for several area schools.
  • If the June date is your "back up" date in case you choose to take the test an additional time, be aware that it is June 14, which may conflict with season-end sports competitions.  Plus, trying to do prep and study for finals can be a lot to focus on at the same time!
  • Students can take a practice ACT test at no cost on November 16 at Knowledge Edge to get a baseline score on the test.

ACT or SAT prep with Knowledge Edge should start 10-14 weeks before a student takes the test.  Look at your calendar and call now to discuss plans for your student's preparation.
MS/HS Study Skills on Wednesdays

Equip your high school or middle school student with skills that can make a difference across the curriculum.

Knowledge Edge will offer 1-hour Study Skills sessions for small groups on Wednesday evenings.  Middle school sessions will be 5:30 to 6:30, high school from 6:30-7:30.

Topics covered will be organization/time management, test preparation; note-taking during lectures, from texts and other sources; and reading and mnemonic devices.  For more information, call 262-238-8867 or email mequon@knowledge-edge.net
Going to Parent/Teacher Conferences? Understand the Data

Most schools have become much more focused on the use of data gathered from standardized assessments and other more frequent, less formal assessments like tests, quizzes and homework.  Using data can be incredibly helpful to teachers, but parents should know the type of data being used and the meaning of it, too.

Most parents have access to their student's scores through PowerSchool or other similar program that gives access to grades.  As a parent, how can you best use this information? The attached Tip Sheet from the Harvard Family Research Project (HFRP) is a great resource to look at before conferences so you can discuss your student's data.  In planning for conferences in general, the HFRP has great suggestions as well.  Click here to take a look!

If you learn during conferences that your student is struggling, consider Knowledge Edge.  We work with a student's teachers to form a loop that involves parents, teacher, student and tutor to help a struggling student find success!
