The Source: Commodity Updates Your source for learning how weather and other conditions across the country and the globe affect the quality, availability, and pricing of your fresh fruits and produce.
Quality issues continue to come up on many row crop items due to past weather conditions.
Asparagus - Demand is expected to be strong for Easter. Supplies continue to be very tight on extra large and jumbo sizes.
Blueberries - Farm workers' protesting for wage increases delayed and stopped harvests in Baja, shortening supplies and increasing demand. Domestically, blueberries have just begun in Florida and California.
Blackberries - Due to recent rain and hail in central Mexican growing areas, supplies are expected to remain short for the next week and quality is suspect. Issues include red cells, softness, and occasional mold.
Lettuces and Leafy Greens - Warm temperatures in Yuma and Huron are creating issues with gnats and bugs.
Stone Fruits - Nectarines are dominating the Chilean stone fruit market and demand has increased now that peaches have finished up. Domestic stone fruit is on track to start mid-April, but substantial volume will not be seen until the end of May.
