English for the Future Newsletter
August 2012
Welcome!

The new academic year has arrived and it's time to recover from summer and get ready to teach again! I hope that you all enjoyed your break and are refreshed and ready to help your students. For me, the new academic year offers plenty of opportunities to help teachers and students maximise their skills in English and I hope that you can be a part of this.

English for the Future is a project which aims to help teachers and young people reach their potential in English. This is done by working within four main areas, or themes:

  • Effective Teaching
  • A Good Start in English
  • Learner Independence
  • English for Work

In upcoming newsletters I'm going to examine these in detail - as it's the start of the new year I think it's pertinent to begin by looking at Effective Teaching. The British Council is committed to helping teachers achieve their professional aims through face-to-face training, online training and digital interaction. We work with the Ministry of Education, universities and other partners to hold teacher training events and courses and highlight ways that teachers can become the best teacher they can be.

If any of your friends or colleagues would like to subscribe to the newsletter they can do so by entering their email address at http://www.britishcouncil.org/morocco-newsletter-subscribe-cc.htm.

News

1- World Teacher's Day

October 5th is World Teachers' Day - a day to celebrate the role of the teacher and the vital work we do in helping young people achieve their goals. In order to celebrate the day, the British Council is holding two events: a seminar for teachers in Rabat on Saturday 6th October and a workshop for teachers in Fes on Sunday 7th October.

ELT expert Gavin Dudeney will be giving a presentation and a workshop on "Digital Literacies" at both events. There will also be workshops by ELT specialists, a book sale, opportunities to network and share ideas and a fantastic competition for teachers - with iPads and books up for grabs!

Entry is free - but places are limited. If you would like to attend either event please email nick.cherkas@britishcouncil.org with either "Rabat" or "Fes" in the subject line. First come first served!

2- TKT Module 1 Course

The British Council in Rabat is starting a teacher training course preparing

teachers in Module 1 of the Cambridge ESOL Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT) course. This is a great course for newly qualified and experienced teachers to add to their professional portfolio. The course will be held every Saturday from 14:00 - 17:00 in Hi-Tech school, Hay Riad, and will start on October 6th. It costs 2,700.00 MAD for a 30 hour course - you can register in person at the British Council office in Rabat.

Find out more about TKT here.

3-  IELTS Examiner Recruitment

The British Council is currently recruiting for qualified and experienced teachers to work part-time as IELTS examiners. Do you meet the following requirements?

You can find the application forms here:

http://www.teachingenglish.org.uk/file-share/ielts-examiner-application-forms

Please return them to Imane El Waddi: Imane.elwaddi@britishcouncil.org by October 8th 2012.
The training will take place in November 2012

4- Global English Pronunciation

The emergence of so many different kinds (or 'varieties') of international English has caused a number of linguists to question the use of native speaker pronunciation models in the teaching of English. Read more about Global Englishes and how we might consider this in our teaching at http://www.teachingenglish.org.uk/articles/global-english-teaching-pronunciation

www.teachingenglish.org.uk features thousands of fascinating and though-provoking articles written by teachers and ELT professionals from all over the world. The site is free to use and will give you plenty of fresh ideas while validating what you are already doing in the classroom. Isn't that a great feeling when you know you're doing something really well?
