LPI Research: Update on MMPGS
Save the Dates: Mid-Michigan Program for Greater Sustainability Announces Michigan Ave./Grand River Ave. Vision Charrette
The Tri-County Regional Planning Commission through the Mid-Michigan Program for Greater Sustainability (with its HUD grant partners, including LPI) is hosting a series of public meetings and workshops about the Vision Charrette for the Michigan Avenue/Grand River Avenue Corridor. A charrette design team led by the National Charrette Institute, with town planning firm Dover Kohl & Partners and local and national professionals and academics, will draft a vision and plan for the Michigan/Grand River corridor from the Capital Building to Webberville. These public meetings are an opportunity to gather input from the many people and businesses that reside in and/or frequent the corridor. The goal is to create a sustainable plan for the corridor that includes economic and workforce development, housing, land use, transportation, environmental and infrastructure investments. This is the first of two charrettes to study the Michigan/Grand River corridor. The second charrette in the fall, date to be determined, will zoom in to three focal areas along the corridor. The location of these study areas will be discussed at the first charrette. What is a Charrette? Some call charrettes a combination of a town meeting and a barn raising. The charrette is a fun, creative event where you can: - Work with designers to draw and write ideas for the future vision of the corridor.
- Provide comments and ideas as design happens.
- Learn how community planning works.
Who Should Attend the Charrette? If you live in the three county region (Clinton, Eaton, Ingham counties), or use and travel Michigan Avenue and Grand River Avenue from downtown Lansing eastward to Webberville, then we need your help! Together we will create a regional vision for the Greater Lansing Region's busiest corridor. Vision Charrette Schedule of Events - Opening Event on Wednesday, May 1, 2013, from 6pm-9:30pm: Work alongside your neighbors to draw your ideas for the future of the Michigan/Grand River corridor. Location: The Lansing Center in Lansing.
- Design Studio Open House on Sunday, May 5, from 3pm-5pm: All week (May 2-6), a studio to draw/design a vision for the corridor will be in operation. Stop by to see what's going on. Location: 333 E. Grand River Ave, East Lansing (corner of Grand River Ave. and Charles St.).
- Work-in-Progress Presentation on Tuesday, May 7, from 6:30pm-9pm: Charrette team leaders will summarize the ideas and visions culled from the entire week. Location: East Lansing Hannah Community Center in East Lansing.
When Should I Come to the Charrette? - The public meetings, listed above, are the best opportunities to participate. There you will hear the full story of the work-in-progress and share in a discussion with your neighbors and the experts.
- If you cannot come to the public meetings, then you are welcome to stop by the Charrette Studio during open hours.
Visiting the Charrette Studio All are welcome to visit the Charrette Studio in East Lansing from Thursday, May 2, through Monday, May 6, between 10am and 7pm. We will show you the work-in-progress and record your ideas. These public meetings are free and open to the public. Please send RSVPs to reception@mitcrpc.org or call 517.393.0342. Let's Save Michigan to Host Twitter Town Hall on PopUp Placemaking
Let's Save Michigan (LSM) loves increasing the vibrancy of the state's cities by activating under-utilized places. Sometimes, though, in areas that are going through a transition, it can be difficult to know what major and permanent investments to make. Here's where PopUp Placemaking is becoming an increasingly useful tool. Let's Save Michigan is hosting an online event on Tuesday, March 19, 2013, from 1pm-2pm EST, to share the what, the why, and the how of PopUps, and the public is invited to participate. Make sure to follow along and send in questions to @LetsSaveMich #LSMpopups.
PopUp Placemaking is the temporary activation of a space with lots of potential benefits. PopUps are a chance to experiment and test out what a community wants in a space. They can demonstrate that people will frequent a coffee shop, or a hair salon, or a restaurant. And they highlight an area that people are used to overlooking, asking people to think differently about what's possible.
This Twitter Town Hall will feature a few experts who have been pioneering PopUp Placemaking in places like Detroit and Pittsburgh (PA). The panelists will share their experience using PopUps to encourage business and retail and bring attention to neighborhoods. They'll talk about how to design a PopUp, where to locate it, and how to make it a success. And they'll take questions via Twitter. The panelists include:
Follow along next Tuesday at 1pm EST by watching the @LetsSaveMich Twitter feed, and following the hashtag #LSMpopups. Between now and then, tweet any questions for the meeting ahead of time using #LSMpopups.
For those not on Twitter the summary of the conversation will be shared via the LSM blog in the days following the event. Learn more at PopUp Placemaking Twitter Event.

Rapid Growth's March "Not Your Average Speaker Series" will focus on this topic and the many moving parts that are involved in moving from an automobile-based downtown to a more vibrant pedestrian-, bicycle-, and transit-friendly community. The event will take place from 5:30pm-7pm, on Thursday, March 28, 2013, at The Rapid Central Station community room, across from Founder's Brewing Company in Grand Rapids. Attendees will see presentations from people involved on the Arena South Visioning Steering Committee, including: - Nick Monoyios, Long Range Planner for The Rapid;ˇ

Opportunity to Grow Focus of the Upcoming Model D Speaker Series
Much ado is made about small business start-ups, but the lion's share of job growth is actually created by "gazelles"--fast-growing companies that double their size over a four-year period. Where are these businesses in Detroit? What are their secrets? How do we make more of them? Join Model D at 6pm on Wednesday, March 20, 2013, for a special evening at The Detroit Mercantile Co. in Eastern Market in Detroit to learn more about the City's growing economy. Featured speakers include: The discussion will be moderated by Jon Zemke, business reporter for Model D, Metromode and the Southeast Michigan Startup. This event is free and open to the public, but seating is limited. Please register in advance here. Learn more at Model D Speaker Series. The Ann Arbor Exit Interview Focus of Upcoming Concentrate Speaker Event Why do people move away? The obvious answer is: opportunity. Many assume that better job options incite talent to relocate. But studies and trends show that the answers are usually more complicated than simply the chance for higher paying work. Family, social amenities, livability, environment, education, culture, density of peers, and even public transportation can play an important role in why someone chooses to move to or from a place. For the last few years, local blogger Mark Maynard has been running an occasional interview series called "The Exit Interview." In it, Maynard has a conversation with an Ann Arbor or Ypsilanti local who has chosen to become an ex-local. Concentrate has asked Maynard to moderate a panel of folks who have chosen, for a variety of reasons, to leave Ann Arbor, either personally or professionally. The event will take place from 5pm-7pm, on Thursday, March 28, 2013, and will offer an opportunity to conduct a live exit interview with these people, learn what they'll miss about Ann Arbor, what they'll be glad to leave behind, what opportunities they had here, and what opportunities were lacking. Guest panelists include: Dustin Krcatovich, Jacqui Robbins and Newcombe Clark. The event will take place at Conor O'Neill's in Ann Arbor, and is free and open to the public. Seating is limited so RSVPs are accepted online. Learn more at Concentrate Speaker Event. |
