NCAC's Position Statement on the Decline of Child Abuse

The National Children's Advocacy Center has been actively engaged for almost 30 years in the fight against child abuse by developing and implementing innovative intervention services in collaboration with multidisciplinary team members, delivering child abuse prevention initiatives, increasing public awareness, training professionals working in the field of child maltreatment, assimilating and disseminating emerging research related to child maltreatment to these same professionals, and numerous additional activities. These efforts have been matched and exceeded by countless other organizations and institutions in the United States with one overarching goal - to reduce the incidence and impact of child abuse on our nation's children.  Full statement.

How Much Child Sexual Abuse is "Below the Surface," and Can We Help Adults Identify it Early?

Child sexual abuse (CSA) occurs frequently in society to children aged between 2 and 17. It is significantly more common in girls than boys, with the peak age for CSA occurring when girls are aged 13-17. Many children experience multiple episodes of CSA, as well as having high rates of other victimizations (such as physical assaults). One of the problems for current research in CSA is different definitions of what this means.  No recent review has clearly differentiated more severe forms of CSA and how commonly it is disclosed. This full article is located in CALiO under the Practitioners Reference and Resource Center in the Full-Text Open-Access Publication section under the heading of General Publications on Child Abuse.

Primary Care Interventions to Prevent Child Maltreatment: U.S. Preventive Services Task Force Recommendation Statement

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) makes recommendations about the effectiveness of specific preventive care services for patients without related signs or symptoms. It bases its recommendations on the evidence of both the benefits and harms of the service and an assessment of the balance. The USPSTF does not consider the costs of providing a service in this assessment.

The USPSTF recognizes that clinical decisions involve more considerations than evidence alone. Clinicians should understand the evidence but individualize decision making to the specific patient or situation. Similarly, the USPSTF notes that policy and coverage decisions involve considerations in addition to the evidence of clinical benefits and harms.  This full recommendation statement is located in CALiO under the Practitioners Reference and Resource Center in the Full-Text Open-Access Publication section under the heading of Prevention.

Estimating a Child Sexual Abuse Prevalence Rate for Practitioners: A Review of Child Sexual Abuse Prevalence Studies

Child sexual abuse prevention organizations and practitioners that interact with the public desire a current child sexual abuse prevalence statistic. In 2013, there is not one single definitive study or meta-analysis U.S. practitioners can point to as the basis for a current child sexual abuse prevalence statistic.

This white paper is intended to provide a basis for a range of credible child sexual abuse prevalence rates. U.S. studies that collected child sexual abuse prevalence rate data since 1992 were identified and reviewed. Criteria were established for the age of data, methodology and definition of child sexual abuse. Of the 16 identified studies, six met the criteria established for relevance to practitioners. A range of child sexual abuse prevalence rates has been derived from these studies.   This full article is located in CALiO under the Practitioners Reference and Resource Center in the Statistics and Quick Facts section under the heading of Child Abuse.

What's New in CALiO™ ?

(Child Abuse Library Online)

New to CALiO this month is the publication, "Sexualized and Dangerous Relationships: Listening to the Voices of Low-income African American Girls Placed at Risk for Sexual Exploitation." The goal of the research in this publication is to enhance the scholarly literature regarding urban African American middle school girls by listening to their narratives about personal strengths and weaknesses and about the challenges and supports in their environments.  The publication may be found in CALiO under Practitioners Reference and Resource Center in the Full Text Open Access Publications section under the heading of Child Sexual Exploitation.

Also new to CALiO this month is the "Annotated Bibliography of the Empirical and Scholarly Literature Supporting the Ten Standards for Accreditation by the National Children's Alliance," 2nd Edition.  This bibliography is a valuable resource, commissioned by the National Children's Alliance (NCA) and prepared by the National Children's Advocacy Center.  The bibliography identifies and explicates the existing research, scholarship, empirical data, formal theory, management practice, complementary professional standards, and other evidence that provides a foundation for each of the standards. The bibliography is located in CALiO in the Evidence Based Practice in the Professional Bibliographies.
