One Person Making a Difference: Becoming a Leader of a SIG or Chapter

by Julie E. Kendall, Ph.D. Rutgers University
AIS Vice President of SIGs and Chapters

"One is not born into the world to do everything but to do something."  - Henry David Thoreau, (1817 - 1862) American philosopher, author, poet and abolitionist

When you are elected to become the leader of your SIG or Chapter, you are responsible for keeping your group achieving multiple goals and moving in a positive direction, often over the course of a year or two. In past columns I've emphasized how important attracting a critical mass of people is to the health of your SIG or Chapter.

However, in this column I want to focus on your leadership, the power of the individual to make things happen, and realizing what one person can do. I chose the Thoreau quotation at the beginning of this column because it rings so true. Those of us in leadership positions often feel as if we should do everything.

When faced with so many possible tasks: building internal relationships, fostering research, and serving as liaison to the AIS community, the Council, and our Region, we often feel paralyzed by our inability to do everything.

Many leaders have approached me rather sheepishly at meetings and apologized for not completing all of their tasks. They often reveal they were "swamped" with work when they took on the office. But too often the result of juggling our leadership positions with our research, teaching, and family is "Do nothing."

We all know that to "Do Nothing," is not a real option for a SIG or Chapter leader, and has just as many negative consequences as trying to "do everything."

Rather, our choice must be "Do something." Act, even if it appears at first glance to be minor  - invite members from other SIGs with allied research interests to organize something jointly; share your Chapter annual reports with other Chapters in your region; set an appointment to socialize informally with your members during conferences; or seek out Council members to talk with.

Do something. You will make a difference.
