January 2016
Pamela Coan - BPCIA President
A new year is upon us, bringing with it a fresh start and new ideas. I hope everyone in the community had the opportunity to visit with family and friends over the holidays and is ready and eager for 2016.
We are fortunate to work in a community with thriving businesses, new additions to the community and I hope all felt some prosperity in 2015 so here is a short re-cap of the BPCIA events in 2015.
Our 100th anniversary event in March 2015 was a highlight for the BPCIA. The event enabled past presidents, current members and friends to share in our celebration. We would like to acknowledge and thank Mark and Jon Weglarz for sponsoring the bar for this historic event. Our quarterly meetings were well attended and offered excellent educational content as well as best business practices. In April 2015, Congressman Dan Lipinski spoke of the events within the State of Illinois 3rd district and Mayor David Brady gave us a State of Village address. The August quarterly meeting was co-hosted with the Oak Lawn Chamber and was well attended. We hope to partner with neighboring associations to bring more value to our members.
The BPCIA added several new members to the association this year. Our best advocates are our current members. We appreciate your help in getting our name and mission out to your business associates.  With two golf outing dates at Cog Hill to choose from, each one had some familiar faces as well as new potential members.
The BPCIA membership committee hosted a Meet & Greet event in October for non-BPCIA members and are always welcoming referrals to the association. We appreciate to learn any news about your business and how we, the association, can help you.
Thank you for your continued support of the association. My tenure as your president will end in April. I have truly enjoyed leading this organization for the past two years. It was founded in 1915 and one of the state's oldest business associations. I appreciate all the help and guidance from my fellow board members and encourage everyone to become involved if possible.

Chicago's Airports Awarded for Excellence in Aviation Security
The Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA) is pleased to announce that several members of its Safety and Security Section, as well as some of its airport security partners at O'Hare and Midway International Airports, are recipients of 9/11 Medals from the International Association of Airport and Seaport Police (INTERPORTPOLICE).

The awards are presented to "Officers and officials who serve each and every day fighting terrorism and serious crime across the glove in order to make the world a safer place" according to INTERPORTPOLICE - an organization established in 1969 by global law enforcement and public safety agencies in Canada, Netherlands, United Kingdom, and United States.

"The Chicago Department of Aviation is very proud of its Safety and Security Teams at O'Hare and Midway," said CDA Commissioner Ginger S. Evans.  "We congratulate our staff, as well as members of the Chicago Police Department, Transportation Security Administration and Federal Bureau of Investigation for their outstanding work at police and public safety operations at Chicago's airports."

Bill Sandrick Discussed Cook County Property Tax Incentives and Much More at Last Quarterly Meeting
Attorney Bill Sandrick of Sandrick Law Firm has 25 years experience vigorously contesting property tax assessments and securing the various property tax incentives available in Cook County.  At the BPCIA Quarterly meeting in December Mr. Sandrick discussed the appeal process with emphasis on tax incentives, including the new SER, TEERM, and 7C programs.

Know Your Neighbor:  The Concord Group
The Concord Group is a team of highly skilled professionals that specialize in the area of Cost Segregation. As a team, we utilize our expertise and capabilities to create value for our clients by helping them increase their cash flow through accelerated depreciation. With offices throughout the Midwest, The Concord Group has built a reputation for delivering high quality, accurate and timely work.

If you are unfamiliar with Cost Segregation, allow me to explain. Cost Segregation is a valuable tax planning strategy utilized by property owners who have constructed, purchased, expanded, or remodeled any kind of property. A Cost Segregation study is used to increase cash flow by accelerating depreciation deductions and deferring federal and state income taxes. This is accomplished by a reclassification of assets from the standard depreciation period of 39 or 27.5 years to as a few as 15, 7 or even 5 years. Along with the ability to be performed on new construction and acquisitions, this service can also help property owners that have existing properties where a cost segregation study has not yet been performed.

A properly prepared Cost Segregation Study will pay for itself many times over and you can start to take advantage of the cash flow savings immediately upon the completion of the study. The Concord Group offers a  free preliminary analysis that will help you determine if this is the right strategy for your investment. I have attached a copy of our brochure, which contains several examples of the different building types and their associated benefits. If you would like to discuss any opportunities or if you have any questions, please contact The Concord Group at 312-424-0250 or visit our website  www.concord-cc.com.

Business Networking - Top 10 Characteristics All Master Networkers Must Have
Networking is one of the most important skills you must learn in business. More money is made from your networks than any other marketing medium. To build your network you must learn key networking skills and become a Master Networker. Every Master Networker has ten key characteristics, if you do not have these ten key characteristics then you must adopt them immediately and live your life by them.

1. Always Be Positive Even In A Bad Situation
Regardless of how you feel, or the situation you are in you must always be positive. One of the sad things about this world is that nobody cares if you are down. Unfortunately it is a fact of life, so it is important that when you are networking you are at all times positive.

2. Always Be Sincere
The world seems to be made up of very rude people and it only seems to be getting worse, as more people adopt the rude characteristic. Being rude will never win you friends and will only alienate those around you. The Master Networker always has a key characteristic to always be sincere even in a difficult situation.

3. Be Prepared To Help Others
Always be prepared to help others regardless of who they are. If you remember that there are only 6 degrees of separation between each of us, you must be prepared to help others because you just never know who they know or you may be helping someone who will help you in the future.

4. Always Be Networking
Whenever you leave home, your mind should always be focused on networking. You just never know when a new opportunity might arise; it could be in the supermarket buying the weekly groceries or some one you sit next to on the plane on your way to your business meeting.

5. Work Your Network
Your network is a part of your Mastermind Group that will help you build the success you desire. Working your network involves, asking for referrals from your network, advice and also asking them to share their experiences.

6. Always Follow-up On Your Referrals
If someone suggests that you give someone a call or they give you an introduction ensure that you follow-up on your referrals. If someone has given you a referral, then they are handing you an opportunity and they are also putting their reputation on the line by giving you the referral. If you do not follow-up on that referral you may find that you lose out in the future.

7. Be Enthusiastic About Life
Business is a tough world and many people are easily downed by the pressures that it brings. One of the secrets of Master Networkers is that they are enthusiastic about life and further to that they love the challenges and excitement that business brings.

8. Always Keep Your Word
If you say you are going to do something then you must keep your word. Some of the great deals on this planet are done without contracts because the people doing the deals are known to keep their word.

9. Be 100% Trustworthy
Trust is an important characteristic of a Master Networker. If your network cannot trust you then they are not going to introduce you to quality referrals or to allow you to join their Mastermind Group.

10. Always Thank People
The sweetest thing to hear is a Thank you from a grateful person and in business today it is one of the things you very rarely hear people say. Thanking people can come in a number of forms, from a simple verbal thank you to sending a simple note to thank the person.
