Personal Money Planning's Newsletter
September 27, 2014
Gary Silverman, CFP

Thanks for reading our newsletter! This time, I share a little information about my recent trip (it was a business trip, but I found a little time to explore as well), more articles focusing on my first 20 years in business, Michelle's ongoing blog on money matters, and a quick look at some resources on our website.

Have a great weekend!

Last week I was in Seattle. Apparently I am the cause of the drought in Wichita Falls since when I took myself to the rainy city of the Northwest, it stopped raining there as well. I'm thinking of renting myself out to places experiencing floods or to families planning outdoor events.

While I was there, my friend Rebecca and I went to the EMP museum (long-time readers will remember her as an employee many years ago). EMP (empmuseum.org) at first seems to be a museum dedicated to rock-n-roll. However, in addition to electric guitars and music videos, the collections included Robby the Robot from Lost in Space, swords from movies like Princess Bride and Lord of the Rings, and guns from Battlestar Gallactica and Men in Black.

It's a rather weird combination. That is, until you realize the museum's founder, Paul Allen (Microsoft co-founder) has 1) a lot of money, and 2) interests and extensive collections in music and science fiction. The museum is a fusion of the Experience Music Project and the Science Fiction Museum. My guess is that Paul's girlfriend told him to get the stuff out of the house.

In any case, if you are in Seattle and are into music or SciFi, the EMP museum is worth a visit.

Michelle's Money Diet Plan

Michelle Kuehner, our in-house Certified Credit and Financial Health Counselor (among other things), tackles many of the money issues in her blog at www.MoneyDietPlan.com. Just as we need to keep track of our what and how much we eat to try and stay healthy, planning our money matters helps to keep us financially healthy.

When it comes to your finances and your estate, how you plan now can impact the lives of those you will leave behind when you pass on.

In this post, Michelle discusses different scenarios of home ownership when one of the owners passes. In another post, she talks about the relief felt by surviving family when a terminally ill family member has prepared the important paperwork. She lists what you should have ready for your own family.

Final Thoughts
Website resource

The last time you were looking over your budget (you do have a budget, don't you?) did you find yourself wondering if you should pay your mortgage bi-weekly; or if it would be better to put more of your surplus toward your savings instead of that debt? Well, these and other questions can get a quick-and-simple answer through one of the financial calculators in our calculator library. Of course, there will always be other factors to consider, but if you are wondering, this is a good place to start.
