The Olympic Spirit

When you read this, the Olympics are either just about over, ending, or are complete. As my long-time readers know, the Winter Olympics is the most important one for me as it is just about the only time I get to watch my favorite sport, curling, on television. Even though I'm writing this a week ahead of time, it is already clear that the USA curlers did rather poorly. Anticipating this from the beginning I already had back-up teams to root for. I hope  they won.

Although it seems winning is the point of the Olympics (who doesn't tire of the nightly recap of what country has the most medals), to me the true Olympic moments are not when the winner steps onto the podium, but when an athlete, sprawled on the snow after a race, barely able to catch her breath, is overjoyed to have come in 27th place...having done her best.
Sure, some Olympians have the goal of winning. And I doubt that any of them would object to that result. But being able to say to themselves that the hard work, perseverance, and support they've received got them to the point of being able to achieve what before they could only dream about: That is the power behind the Olympic spirit.

Final Thoughts
Curling Humor

In case there was any concern that curling would lead down a dark path, rest assured that curling could be considered "a legitimate religious activity, with scriptural sanction," according to Dundas Granite.

For example, the Bible ..

.. speaks to the beginner who is assigned as Lead:
"He that is without sin among you, let him cast the first stone." (John 8:7)

.. urges the Second whose Lead has drawn two stones into the house:
"Be thou a guard unto them." (Ezekiel 38:7)

.. confirms a Second's personal resolution, as his Skip throws a take-out:
"I will sweep with the besom of destruction." (Isaiah 14:23)

.. describes the Vice(-skip)'s shots:
"The rocks are thrown down by him." (Nahum 1:6)

.. and notes the remarks of surprise and joy made by his Skip:
"Behold he smote the rock" (Psalm 78:20)
"Their rock is removed out of place." (Job 14:8)

.. makes only one comment about the activity of the Skip:
"Why stand ye here all the day idle?" (Matthew 20:16)
