Money 101
JANUARY 5, 2013
Howdy!

Happy New Year!

I hope this newsletter finds you well, and getting back into the swing of things after the recent holidays. You may have been glued to the television watching the bowl games, or the more  nail-biting saga of the Fiscal Cliff, either way, it's been a great source of entertainment.

If your New Year's resolutions have you spending, saving, or paying off debt, please take a look at the Money 101 article below. Gail Cunningham offers some great advice when it comes to reaching your goals without hurting yourself financially in the process.

Have a great week!

Stepping Away from The Cliff

With the turn of the New Year two things come to mind: The Fiscal Cliff, and Swag. You can read about the "Cliff" here, then head to the bottom of the newsletter for a bit of swag.

Now that the cliff has be avoided, it still might be a good idea to know what the heck it was in the first place. Was it going to hurt? Were their rocks or fluffy marshmallows at the bottom? What exactly is it that we avoided? The reason I'm bringing this up is that the same forces (otherwise known as politics) that brought us to the cliff-edge are still at work. Maybe a little knowledge will help you help your representative not teeter on the edge like we did this time.

To learn more about the cliff (which is actually a series of falls), I turn to the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas for a look at the six stumbles that might be benign or might cause short-term economic disaster. (Warning: While it is written to a general audience, this is, after all, economics. You may not want to operate heavy machinery after reading it.) Read More...

Then there's swag. New Years brings the start of conference season for the financial industry. Sometimes I get so many trinkets at these shows that I need an additional suitcase to haul the stuff back. For a humorous look at swag, here's a video from the Wall Street Journal from a Charles Schwab conference a couple years back. Believe me, nothing has changed. http://live.wsj.com/video/swag-at-schwab/BCB3A39F-2C5E-4C02-80C2-0DD12450571C.html#!BCB3A39F-2C5E-4C02-80C2-0DD12450571C
