Money 101
DECEMBER 22, 2012
Howdy!
Gary Silverman, CFP
Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Newtown, Connecticut. Any time of year a tragedy like this occurs is a bad time, but of course this sting will linger.

As we move through this holiday season, hug your kids a little tighter, remind your significant other just how significant they are, and tell your friends what they mean to you.

Gary's Soapbox: The Aftermath

We want to do something. We want to prevent what happened in Connecticut from ever happening again. We want an end to the violence. We want to do something.

The easiest thing to do is to ban assault rifles. Of course, that would have done nothing to prevent the shootings. After all, there are already many thousands of assault-looking rifles out there. So maybe you ban all semi-automatic rifles, no matter how they look. But didn't he (the most recent 'he') also have two hand-guns?

To solve the problem, you'd have to ban the sales of just about all firearms and confiscate those that already exist. That won't happen politically. Even if it did, I doubt that the Supreme Court would go along with it, unless the constitution was also amended.

What about background checks? Well, I'm guessing that his mom, who owned the guns in question, would have had no problem passing a background check and obtaining her fire arms - the firearms she owned and used legally.

And please, don't get me started talking about arming the school staff.

I'm not saying that everything is peaches. I'm saying that these proposed solutions won't solve the problem.

Neither will throwing money at mental health (which, by the way, needs more money thrown at it).

Neither will putting prayer back in the schools, saying the pledge of allegiance, or teaching ethics.

In fact, violence of this type has actually been going down over the last decade or so. I think a lot of that comes from people reporting suspicious activity and erring on the side of caution.

Now, though I don't think that most of the proposed solutions I'm hearing from Washington will prevent horrific acts like this from happening again, that doesn't mean that they aren't good ideas. Many are likely steps in a well thought-out process toward a true solution. And given the incredible terror than can come from inaction, I don't fault folks for putting the cart before the horse.

But I don't want it to end there. I want the steps that we take to lead somewhere we all want to go.

Reason For The Season

The Birth Of Jesus
...So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night.  An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.   But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.   Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.   This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger."  Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,  "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests."

Luke 2:4-14 (NIV)

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Sincerely,
