NOVEMBER 10, 2012
Howdy!
Gary Silverman, CFP
Whew! We made it through the election season. Now it is time to get to work. Hopefully, the bickering will subside enough to keep our economy from jumping of the fiscal cliff. More information about that subject in the Eaton Vance Q&A section below.

Have a fantastic weekend and remember to thank the veterans in your life for your freedom.

Veterans Day

It's Veterans Day weekend. For some it represents an extra day off. For others a parade with people struggling to fit in old uniforms throwing candy to the crowd. But we all know, at least to some extent, that it is meant to give honor to those who were willing to go into harms way on our behalf. Not all veterans have fought in a war, but they all were in a career that they knew could ask them to fight one.

My Dad was in the 3rd Marine Division during World War II. They arrived at Guadalcanal after the island had been taken, and from there joined the battle for Bougainville, then Guam, and finally Iwo Jima. Fortunately for him, my Dad was reassigned to a SeaBee detachment in Guam and never had to visit the volcanic shores of that island. Iwo Jima claimed well over 5000 casualties from the 3rd. I knew more of what he went through by way of books than from his testimony. Most from that war didn't talk all that much about what they experienced. But those experiences never left them.

Today's veterans from our recent wars have their own stories to tell. Those on the home-front experience the war much more differently than my Mom did. This time information comes to families in real time though e-mails and Skype, but strangely to most of the public it is as if the war does not exist. Still, like my Dad, our modern-day veterans have been through things the rest of us will never fully understand. Every one of them returns different--their lives forever altered.

World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Kuwait, Afghanistan, Iraq, and the myriad battles, operations, policing actions, patrols, and training that have occurred in-between...Every day as far back as the United States is old, a soldier, sailor, or airman has gone into harms way on our behalf. This is their weekend. They deserve much more.

Happy Thanksgiving

Our next newsletter will come after the Thanksgiving holiday, so I will take this opportunity to wish you and yours the best. Even better, I'll leave you with a few jokes to tell around your Thanksgiving Day table.

What smells best at a Thanksgiving dinner?
Your Nose.

Why can't you take a turkey to church?
Because they use such FOWL language.

Bah-dum-bum.
