Money 101
OCTOBER 13, 2012
Howdy!
Gary Silverman, CFP
Wichita Falls area residents: Some of you do spring cleaning, others wait until the fall. Well, fall has arrived, and if you need to safely get rid of some old paper (do I need to remind you about identity theft?), go to the free shred day sponsored by The Paper Pig. Next Saturday, October 20, The Paper Pig will shred up to 3 boxes or bags that you can carry to the Sikes Senter Mall parking lot (next to the Hampton Inn). The event is from 8 AM to noon next Saturday.

Have a great week!

The marketing person in my office, Tina, is also a writer and blogger. She recently shared an NPR story about author Amanda Hocking on her Facebook page. For those unfamiliar with Ms. Hocking, she's a 20-something writer who was recently rewarded with a multi-million dollar book deal. But this deal wasn't created with magic, unless you count the characters in her paranormal romances. She worked hard to create numerous novels that she decided to self-publish when the rejections started to litter up her inbox.

In my Biz to Biz columns, I often discuss what it takes to get ahead in business. Ms. Hocking knew she had to treat her dream of writing for a living as just that, a business. She was particularly inspired by an unlikely source, the bass player of the punk band Blink-182,  Mark Hoppus. She said he knew that it wasn't "enough to have a passion--you have to have a work ethic...[It's] not enough to want something. You have to be able to work for it, too, and put in the hours and the time."

If you are  dreaming about that next step, either in your career, your life or your  new business, shift into action. Take the next step instead of hoping for the planets to align and create the perfect time to begin. The time will pass whether you start or not.

Stock Market "Report"
Before I go, I thought I would leave you with this stock market report:

Helium was up, feathers were down.
Paper was stationary.
Fluorescent tubing was dimmed in light trading.
Knives were up sharply.
Cows steered into a bull market.
Pencils lost a few points.
Hiking equipment was trailing.
Elevators rose, while escalators continued their slow decline.
Weights were up in heavy trading.
Light switches were off.
Mining equipment hit rock bottom.
Diapers remained unchanged.
Shipping lines stayed at an even keel.
The market for raisins dried up.
Coca Cola fizzled.
Caterpillar stock inched up a bit.
Sun peaked at midday.
Balloon prices were inflated.
Scott Tissue touched a new bottom.
And batteries exploded in an attempt to recharge the market.

Sincerely,
