Would You Sign Up With You?
with Susan Sly

"You have to have more leads than you have time." The commanding voice of Jeffery Combs echoed in my head. I sat there sheepishly contemplating who I should call. A name would pop in my head and I would quickly dismiss them as already too wealthy, not likely to be interested, wouldn't want to be involved in network marketing and so forth. I contemplated my entrepreneurial career, or lack there of. I had spoken to some friends and family members and none were overly interested in what I had to offer. My friend, Nick, whom I thought would for sure want to get started was now avoiding my calls. Putting my head in my hands, I sat there feeling sorry for myself; I had more time than I had leads.

That incarnation of me occurred in early 2002. I was new to network marketing and had enrolled several people with the products of that company. I failed, however to actually get someone to be interested in the business. The people I knew who seemed so successful told stories of effortlessly recruiting their mailman, UPS driver, their neighbor and basically all of their family. What was wrong with me? Some of my friends were already avoiding me. Others had gotten started on the products somewhat out of pity. As a personal trainer, a few of my clients were using the company's vitamin line but other than that I was not experiencing the proverbial residual income touted by the people in the magazine that was now coming to my home.

What occurred to me was that I did not feel confident about sharing what I had and because I lacked confidence people did not feel inclined to get started with me. I knew that if I was going to be successful I had to become the person I would sign up with. I decided that I would work harder; I would figure out which products I was passionate about and furthermore, I would dig-in and learn the skills required to grow a business.  I made the decision to totally immerse myself, let go of my excuses, roll up my sleeves, stop playing and start getting to work.

I practiced my story in front of the mirror; I had been told to do it however thus far had failed to do so. I listened to Cutting Edge Media Calls late on Thursday nights and heard trainers like Jeffery, Todd Falcone and others - whatever they suggested, as crazy as it sounded, I did it. I studied posture, tone, how to connect and how to close a sale. I started cold-calling leads, talking to strangers on the street and yes, even calling people out of the phone book. I knew that if I was ever going to be successful I had to be willing to be bad enough long enough to get good. Living in Toronto at the time, the phone book was very big and provided an endless stream of free leads. These served me well to practice on and although I personally did not enroll anyone from the phone book, I did manage to learn how to double and triple-close (a Hatrick to us Canadians) 3 people at once cold-calling.

At the behest of my sponsor I was now devouring books like Robert Kiosaki's Rich Dad Poor Dad and couldn't get enough of the personal development that seemed to accompany my new 'side business.' I listened to Jeffery's cassette tapes on my Sony Walkman. I did affirmations every morning and night. My sponsor would also grill me on how to present the compensation plan, over and over again until I got it right.  Chris, I am sure thought I was crazy.

My results began to improve, as did my skills. Sadly, just as I was expanding my business to the Philippines, and really growing my team, that company closed down for lack of compliance. People were making health claims. It was the summer of 2003 and I sat listlessly on my sofa again feeling sorry for myself. My brief immersion had given me skills - prospecting and enrolling in both the warm and cold market, presenting, 3-way calls, leading conference calls and more.  I had finally become the woman I would sign up with and now there was nothing left to sign up in. By the Grace of God, Isagenix came along and the rest is history.

My message for you today is that if you want to be successful you have got to become the man or woman you would enroll with. There are 8 key skills to master and a set of attitudes and beliefs that accompany those who have 'made it' versus those who have not. I meet many people who would love to have the results of Jimmy Smith, or any of the top earners in Isagenix and yet have never fully immersed themselves in learning the skills, facing countless rejections and ultimately having to learn the tough lessons.

My friend, Rita Davenport, says that everyday the most important person we have to recruit is ourselves.  During this 90 Day Game Plan and beyond you will have to re-recruit yourself each and every single day.  I encourage you to plug into the Monday Night calls where we will be drilling down on the skills, find out what books the top leaders read, be willing to talk to people while letting go of your fear of judgment or ridicule.  Yes, we are all going for physical results over these 90 days however I promise you it is much more about becoming the person you would enroll with than a certain rank or check.

Know that I do believe in you.  Let's go for it!

With love and appreciation,

Susan
