AT THE STATE THEATRE
Annie
RUNNING TO PLACES  PRESENTS:
Annie
  Jan 11 - 13

Running to Places Theatre Company follows up the smash success of A Christmas Carol with the family favorite - Annie! The beloved musical tells the story of the plucky young orphan who never fails to believe that better times are "only a day away."

Annie (Erin Hilgartner) longs to escape the depression-era orphanage run by the rotten Miss Hannigan (Ilana Wallenstein) to find her birth parents, whom she holds out hope of one day discovering. Grace (Keara Byron), the lovely assistant to billionaire Oliver Warbucks (Brendan Coyle), brings Annie to his fifth Avenue mansion for Christmas knowing how much each of them would benefit from having a family. Hannigan and her brother known as "Rooster" (Michael Sloan) and his floozy girlfriend Lily St. Regis (Elisheva Glaser) hatch a scheme to steal Annie and thousands of dollars from Warbucks, and everyone works to stop them - all the way up to President Franklin Delano Roosevelt (Caleb Harris).

  The Kitchen Theatre Presents:

The Whipping Man

January 23 - February 16

The Civil War is coming to an end when Caleb, a Jewish Confederate soldier, returns to his Richmond home. The house is in ruins, and the only people remaining are two of his family's former slaves, Simon and John. All three men are bound there-Caleb is badly wounded but unwilling to go to a hospital, Simon is anxiously awaiting the return of his wife and daughter, John has nowhere else to go-and all three hold painful secrets. Bound by their shared faith and history, the men struggle with their responsibility toward each other and their hopes for the future in this moving drama.

In conjunction with the Ithaca premiere of The Whipping Man, the Kitchen Theatre Company will present a number of ancillary events: free pre-show discussions with local experts on Civil War history, slavery, and Judaism and post-show talk backs with the cast and director.

The first event will be on Thursday, January 17th at 7:30pm: Cornell Professor Ross Brann will speak about Jewish immigration to the U.S. in the 19th century and Jewish involvement in the American Civil War in the south and the north.

On Thursday, January 31st, County Historian Carol Kammen will speak on "Tompkins County in the Civil War."

On Saturday, February 9th, Rabbi Scott Glass will lead a pre-show discussion, and on Friday, February 1st and Friday, Feburary 9th, there will be free post-show talkbacks with the actors and other members of the creative team. More events are likely to be added, so check our website at www.kitchentheatre.org for up-to-date information.

During the run of The Whipping Man, the Kitchen Theatre lobby will feature an exhibit of Civil War quilts on loan from the History Center and a new exhibit of local Civil War soldiers' graves photographed by Dave Burbank and curated by Carol Kammen.

The 3rd annual Winter Village Bluegrass Festival promises a relaxing and inspiring weekend of great music! Winter bluegrass festivals provide musicians and music lovers the opportunity to hear great music, jam with friends, and learn new tunes, while enjoying the warmth and comfort of an indoor venue.

WVBF

This year, WVBF is focusing on national bands from the Northeast. The Gibson Brothers, from the northern Adirondacks, are returning for a full day of workshops and performances, with some new bluegrass bling in tow - they were just voted IBMA's Entertainers of the Year,  prize of IBMA's award show.   Della Mae, nominated for 2012 IBMA Emerging Artist of the Year, is a great Boston-based and all-female band.  They will perform and lead workshops on Saturday.   Frank Solivan & Dirty Kitchen, another 2012 Emerging Artist nominee from the DC area, will join Della Mae on Saturday for workshops and performances.  And we are very excited about the return to Ithaca of former Ithacan Chris Stuart & Janet Beazley, with Fiddler John Mailander for a full weekend of performances and workshops.  Local favorites Cornerstone will join Chris for a few reunion tunes and Paris Texas featuring Bobby Henrie will perform with many guest artists.
