News from the Northwest Conference

CHIC invites students to make a SHIFT in their commitment to Christ

Roughly 1,300 attend from NWC

CHIC happened! Over 5,500 people attended the Evangelical Covenant Church's triennial youth event, CHIC, July 12-17 at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. Roughly 1,300 of those were from the Northwest Conference, and we certainly made our presence known.

The theme of SHIFT invited students to make a shift in their worldview, commitment to Christ and view of the Holy Scriptures. In addition to powerful speakers, robust worship, interesting and educational morning base camp sessions, students found time for rafting, hiking, cave tours, swimming and other activities on and off campus.

In case you have people at church wondering if all the fund-raising, long road trip, and sleepless nights are worth it, read youth pastor and CHIC council member, Ben Kerns' thoughts on why CHIC is so important.

CHIC is more than a one-week experience for high school students. Click here for a free 6-week, all-church discipleship curriculum, written specifically as a follow-up to CHIC. The SHIFT curriculum includes a sermon series, adult bible study, and youth and children's ministry program elements.

Mark your calendars and plan to bring your volunteers to this free event to celebrate, encourage and train your children and family ministry team.

Our presenters, Jim and Lynne Jackson, have over 25 years of both parenting experience and professional experience as authors, speakers and coaches working with families of highrisk teens and children with behavior challenges. In 2002 they launched the ministry organization Connected Families to give hope and build strength in families.

Their work has helped thousands of parents and ministry leaders learn to be peaceful, purposeful and confident in their work with the children entrusted to their care.

An all-day learning opportunity for pastors, ministry staff, and key lay leaders with Bill Henson as the presenter

This is part of our ongoing effort to resource our pastors and churches in living faithfully and graciously into our Covenant position on human sexuality. Bill presented to 140 of our pastors in May and is coming back for the training of both pastors and lay leaders. More details coming soon.

In addition:

Pastors,

We have scheduled 9 two-hour small group sessions for the remainder of the summer and the fall with Dr. Gary Strauss around this same topic. Over 80 pastors indicated interest. If you did not indicate interest in a group by calling or emailing the NWC office, but would now be interested, contact Jessa Anderson for the schedule and availability.

Check your hourly wage rates

Many churches pay part time musicians, ministry coordinators and other workers a flat weekly rate. That's OK, but workers should still track hours and churches must meet minimum wage rules. Minnesota's minimum wage is increasing to $9 per hour effective Aug. 1 if annual income (all money coming in) is $500,000 or more ($7.25 per hour if annual income is less than $500,000).

As an example, if Covenant Church pays a nursery coordinator $125 per week on the assumption that s/he will be working approximately 15 hours per week, the employee can now only work 13 hours and 50 minutes per week without increasing the weekly $125 rate.

Iowa, North Dakota and Wisconsin minimum wage is $7.25; South Dakota minimum wage is $8.50. Weekly rate divided by minimum wage = maximum hours.
