Navigate 2014 helps churches from across the country become healthy and missional

The Northwest Conference and Minnehaha Academy served as hosts of the national Navigate Conference 2014, which took place at the school Oct. 31 to Nov. 2. An initiative of the Covenant Office of Congregational Vitality, the purpose of Navigate is to help established churches navigate their way to becoming healthy and missional by establishing synergistic partnerships with the ECC, their regional conference and other local churches on the same journey.

Twenty-two churches from eight different conferences were represented by teams of pastors and lay people. The two churches from the NWC were Harris Covenant in Harris, MN, and Calvary Covenant Church in Grantsburg, WI.

This fifth Navigate event included a number of "firsts." We had our first new church plants represented, our first church from Alaska, and our first missionary, Karl Peterson from Mexico City. A special guest and prayer team member was the newly elected President of the Covenant Church in Mexico, Marisol Velazquez. A special thanks to all the staff, volunteers and local worship leaders who served throughout the weekend.

Bruce Peterson recognized for 37 years of ministry at Covenant Pines

On Sunday evening, Nov. 2, a celebration was held at Minnehaha Academy in honor of Bruce Peterson for his 37 years of faithful service as the Executive Director of Covenant Pines Bible Camp in McGregor, MN.

The auditorium at MA was filled to capacity with standing room only, a fitting honor for Bruce and Rosey Peterson. Former and current staff members had the opportunity to reflect on both Bruce's significant role at the camp, as well as in their personal growth and development. Special music was provided by the Community Covenant Church (Minneapolis) Gospel Choir. The Petersons are active at the church.

Beyond hearing from former and present staff members, Bruce's sons also shared about their father and how grateful they were to have such a great heritage through both their father and mother; a very moving tribute and testimony to the faithful service and commitment of the Petersons.

At the conclusion of the program, NWC Superintendent Mark Stromberg asked people in the auditorium to stand if they had made a significant faith decision while attending Bible Camp. The overwhelming majority of people in the auditorium stood, highlighting the important place that camping ministry has played in our shared life in the NWC.

A reception honoring the Petersons followed in the school cafeteria.
