Annual Meeting Recap

"50 by '25: Our Mission to Plant" launched at 2014 Annual Meeting

With a theme of "Start Churches," the 2014 Northwest Conference Annual Meetings-for both the Ministerial Association and church delegates-took place at Rochester Covenant Church in Rochester, MN, May 1-3. Conference leadership announced "50 by '25: Our Mission to Plant," a new initiative to plant 50 churches in the region by 2025.

"The mission field is huge ... 83% of the population in our region is not attending church and needs to hear the good news," said Mike Brown, NWC director of church planting. "We need to accelerate the pace of Church Planting to see the kind of impact we desire to see. We need to start planting some oaks in the NWC."

Because the Church Planting process is a three-way partnership between the NWC, the Evangelical Covenant Church and local congregations, the Conference is calling on churches to consider how they might provide resources and support to see the family of God expand within its geographic region.

"Our intention is to see 50 new churches-50 mission outposts in 50 new locations-started by 2025. We need the support of our local churches to be able to plant," Brown said. "We want to see new churches in every corner of the NWC, not just in the Twin Cities, but all across the region, because the need is huge."

Catalyst Covenant Church signs Covenant Agreement on May 1

"50 by '25: Our Mission to Plant," is our prayerful commitment to see 50 new churches planted in the Northwest Conference over the next 10 years.

We believe that new churches are needed to reach an increasingly unchurched population, help us reach the burgeoning immigrant population, and allow us to impact neighborhoods and communities we would find it hard to reach any other way. This is one missional priority that will require all of our participation if we are to live into the call we believe God has placed on our hearts.

On May 1, we signed a Covenant Agreement to see our newest church started in the Northwest Conference. Pastor Jeff Olson officially began the planting of Catalyst Covenant Church in the Northeast Metro. Catalyst Covenant Church marks the beginning of this very exciting initiative. Please pray for Pastor Jeff and his growing launch team as they begin this new work. Pray that they might reach many for Jesus Christ, and have a profound impact in their community.

We would also ask you to pray and ask how God might be calling you to get involved so we might see "50 by '25" in the Northwest Conference. Planting new churches and making more disciples is a key missional activity of the Church. We will see this goal reached as we all join together and commit to make it a reality. Thanks for your prayers and your partnership in the Gospel.

Children & Family Ministry

First NWC Family Go: Serve draws 200 to Redeemer Covenant for day of service and learning

Nearly 200 children and family members from throughout the Northwest Conference converged on Redeemer Covenant Church in Brooklyn Park, MN, on April 26 for NWC Family Go: Serve, a day of service and experiential learning for families.

Go: Serve is a new Northwest Conference event, designed for families with children in PreK-upper elementary school. The day was an opportunity for families to learn and grow together, in a family-friendly, yet stretching environment suitable for younger children.

CHIC Transportation

The NWC will again be  providing safe, reliable and economic bus transportation to and from CHIC. You get to hang out with students or sleep without worrying about highway construction or what to do if the bus breaks down.

We should have an idea of what the transportation cost will be by this July. (The bus company needs to wait until a year from the event in order to estimate fuel costs.) If your group is going to Knoxville early, staying longer, or wants to take a side trip, you can still go through the NWC for great bus prices.

Redeemer Covenant youth pastor participates in Roof 4 Youth

Todd Kardell, youth pastor at Redeemer Covenant, has joined youth pastors from nine Brooklyn Park area churches to sit on the roof of Discover Church on Hwy 252 for 48 hours to raise awareness and funds to build a shelter for homeless youth. The Brooklyn Park city council has approved the building of a 12-bed facility for homeless youth (ages 16-21) through Avenues for Homeless Youth.

In the Osseo school district, there are 400 (identified) homeless youth. The facility will serve as a transitional housing program where young people can live as they gain stability in their lives. Kardell explained that 48 hours is a significant number because that is the typical window of time before a young person on the streets is solicited for human trafficking.

"The goal of these churches is to raise funds, but more importantly, awareness of the issue," Kardell said.

Redeemer Covenant's Pastor, Steven Larson, has been involved in rallying Brooklyn Park area leaders for the past 4 years, working with churches, police departments, schools and local community organizations to start a task force to address the problem of homelessness in their community.

"My passion as a pastor is that we can work together with all the community leaders," Larson said. Redeemer Covenant has a long and difficult history, but, "God has brought a restored heart and that's who this church is in the community of Brooklyn Park and I love it."

In fact, each ministry staff member at Redeemer is to spend 25 percent of their time in the community, so between four full-time ministry staff members, that equates to a full-time position dedicated to community ministry and outreach.

Muriel Rocene

Muriel Rocene, 87, who worked in the Covenant Offices accounting department for 40 years, died April 10.

Muriel was born in Little Falls, MN, and attended Minnehaha Academy in Minneapolis and North Park College in Chicago.

She served under four Covenant presidents-Theodore W. Anderson, Clarence Nelson, Milton Engebretson, and Paul Larsen. Muriel held the position of office manager from 1971 until her retirement in 1983.

"She gave her whole life in service to the Covenant and most likely was the longest serving individual of anyone who ever worked at Covenant Offices," said Dean Lundgren, vice president for finance and director of pensions. "In her last year of service, prior to her retirement, I had the privilege of being her supervisor-which actually means she taught me what to do."
