When God Calls You Out
Pastor's Perspective

Confessions of a Church Planting Pastor

By John DuBall, Lead Pastor of New Day Covenant Church in Rochester, MN

Confession #1: I didn't want to plant a church ... or to become a pastor ... or to be involved in full-time ministry. Nope. I had my own plans to fly below the radar of God's eyes and make it through life without having to go through the painful circumstances a "called" leader had to endure. I fit within the camp of every reluctant leader that God placed his hands upon and said, "Go, lead and serve."

Thirty years I've lived in this struggle of wrestling with God's call in my life. I've read the stories of similar reluctant leaders who tried to run from God. My thoughts of trying to merrily float away without notice reminds me that God could easily toss me off, have me swallowed by a giant something, and then vomited out onto the place He has called me to serve.

I've been tempted to choose that option often (in hopes that maybe our Lord could get someone else a LOT better, smarter and talented than myself to be His messenger). Everyday I have to face the reality that God is calling me to trust HIM more than myself. It's something the Apostle Paul had to learn the hard way too:

"Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential .... But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong .... For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength."

Our God makes a habit of calling reluctant leaders into a life of surrendered obedience in order to get His message across in a powerful way. I've discovered my weakness is the way to His strength.

It's time to start selecting delegates for the 2013 NWC Annual Meeting

We are putting the finishing touches on plans for the 2013 NWC Annual Meeting-which will take place April 25-27 at Minnehaha Academy in Minneapolis, MN-and we've got some very exciting new speakers and events this year! Look for print promotional materials to arrive in the coming weeks, but for now, here's a few of the new elements for 2013:

Speakers

ECC President Gary Walter will be the featured speaker during the Ministerial Association Annual Meeting. Come hear about the great things happening throughout the denomination.

 Kara Powell

Kara Powell, author of "Sticky Faith," will speak during the NWC Annual Meeting Worship Service on Friday, April 26. The service is open to everyone, not just delegates or attendees of the Annual Meeting, so spread the word. Powell will share again on Saturday morning, April 27.

Ministry Fair

The Friday Business Session will conclude with the "Celebration of Mission" Ministry Fair. Delegates and attendees will have an opportunity to learn about and interact with a whole host of conference-related ministries including representatives from our camps, Women Ministries, Town & Country Ministries, Covenant Trust Company, CHET and many more.

Minnehaha Centennial

Throughout the meeting, tours of Minnehaha Academy will be available, and opportunities to learn about the school will be featured during the meeting as well.

On Saturday afternoon, after the NWC Annual Meeting concludes, attendees are invited to participate in a local Centennial Mission Service Project called "Covenant Partners Community Service Day." MA students, parents and alumni will work alongside members of NWC churches to assist those in the neighborhood with home projects.

Stick around for the Minnehaha Academy Centennial Celebration and Worship service on Sunday, April 28.

It's not too early to start selecting delegates and making plans to attend this year's meeting. For more details as they become available, visit our 2013 Annual Meeting page.

Covenant Trust Company
IRA Charitable Rollover

While payroll taxes and budget cuts dominated fiscal cliff talks over the past few months, an important Individual Retirement Arrangement (IRA) provision included in January's fiscal cliff deal slipped under the radar - the IRA Charitable Rollover.

The IRA charitable rollover allows individual taxpayers older than 70½ years to donate up to $100,000 to charities and ministries directly from their Traditional or ROTH IRA. It is set to expire Dec. 31, 2013.

Traditional IRA owners age 70½ and older can use this provision to satisfy their Required Minimum Distribution (RMD). Because the money goes directly from the IRA to the charity, distributions made in this manner are not considered taxable income. Thus, by transferring part or all of your RMD to a Covenant ministry like The Northwest Conference, you can effectively reduce your income tax while supporting your favorite ministries.

Traditional IRA owners under 70½ and ROTH IRA owners do not have to take an RMD, but can still make a direct donation from their IRA to a charity without raising their taxable income.

IRAs are meant to be a source of income for retirement, but that doesn't mean it can only be used to pay bills; they can help you achieve your charitable goals, too. For more information on IRAs and the IRA Charitable Rollover provision, contact one of our local Financial Service Representatives:

Communications Corner
Rules to live by ...

By Bryan Malley, Director of Communications

During a web search to broaden my resource base for church communication tools, I found a document called "50 Ways to Communicate Effectively," published by the Lewis Center for Church Leadership.

The document includes a list of great reminders for any organization looking to beef up communication efforts, and many of the concepts within are also things I repeat to NWC churches when discussing communication. Some of the key concepts include:
  • View communications as a ministry
  • Set clear communications policies
  • Know and honor your audience
  • Prioritize your messages
  • Create a user-friendly bulletin
  • Make your newsletter appealing
  • Be present on the web
  • Develop a media plan
  • Communicate through a wide variety of methods
Some of the references in the document are outdated, but the core concepts are still applicable. Download the pdf from the link above.

NWC Ministry Priorities series
View, embed and share our new videos on Vimeo

Our 2012 Annual Meeting included the debut of three new videos highlighting the Ministry Priorities of the Northwest Conference. Each video features interview segments with church staff, lay leaders and pastors, intermixed with animations of statistics and key statements designed to help explain each priority.

The videos are designed for use throughout the year in church new member classes, services and other adult education opportunities to help congregations better understand and engage the work of the NWC. The delegates from each church left with a DVD copy of the videos, and the series is available on the NWC web site's video page (www.nwc-cov.org/resources/videos) and Vimeo Channel (http://vimeo.com/channels/northwest).
