YPC Topic: The transition from high school to college

YPC logo new Ever wonder why the kids who were so active in youth groups as high schoolers, walk away from the church once they hit college? According to Barna research, "nearly three out of every five young Christians (59%) disconnect either permanently or for an extended period of time from church life after age 15."

Join us as we talk about the transition from high school to college on Thursday, 10/25, from 12-3 p.m. (Note: this is a week later than we usually meet due to MEA.) We'll hear from Brian Pingle, who has been researching this transition. After years as a youth pastor in the local church, Brian switched to teaching youth ministry at North Central University. He's also the director of the Center for Youth and Leadership.

Bring your lunch and meet us at Bethlehem Covenant (3141 43rd Ave. S., Minneapolis, MN 55406-2292).

Book discussion during YPC

Sticky Faith cover One of the strengths of our Youth Pastor's Connection is the opportunity we all have to learn from one another.  So, we've carved out some time during our networking/discussion time for those who want to discuss Sticky Faith.

Dr. Kara Powell and Dr. Chap Clark, along with several of our colleagues in youth ministry, have compiled research around the topic of creating a faith that sticks with students post high school.  If you are interested in being a part of the discussion, you're encouraged to pick up the youth worker edition of Sticky Faith (instead of the parent edition). Read it and join in on the conversation as part of our next Youth Pastors Connection on Oct. 25. Led by Chris Pappenfus
.

Other meeting dates are Nov. 15, Jan. 17, Feb. 21, March 21, April 18 and May 16.

Time to Breathe - Oct. 26-28,

A senior high retreat centered on spiritual practices and providing instruction in various prayer practices and lots of time for students to try them out, reflect and discuss. It's great for students just learning to pray as well as for those looking to go deeper in their relationship with Jesus.

This retreat is sponsored by the denomination and hosted by Salem Covenant Church. Cost is $40 which includes 4 meals (Saturday and Sunday). We'll start Friday at around 8 p.m. and finish Sunday at around 11 a.m. If you can't stay Saturday night we can figure that out, too.

This might be a great fit for most of your group or just a few students. If you have questions or are interested, contact Ben Pease at bpease@salemcov.org. Here's the link to general retreat info:

Luther Seminary's First Third Dialogues present: Why Can't My Church Be More Like Camp? The Power of Immersion Learning in Faith Formation

November 26-27, 2012
Luther Seminary, St. Paul, MN

We'll be digging into this topic theologically and experientially with both presentations and lots of opportunity for conversations to stretch your thinking.

We've asked Mike King of YouthFront in Kansas City, a lifelong camp director who has moved his camper's experiences in profoundly new directions, and Paul Hill, head of Lutheran Outdoor Ministries and great student of all things CAMP to start the dialogue. But we're not staying at camp. The goal is to help you help your church be "more like camp."  For more info: http://www.firstthird.org/events/
