Resident Donates Picture of Old Covered Bridge
Chuck Savare recently stopped by the Municipal Offices to donate a picture he found in his house of historic Hillsborough. The subject of the picture, which is currently on display in the Administration Office, is a covered bridge over the Neshanic River at Blackpoint Road which was torn down in 1928. Mr. Savare also noted that if you look closely at the picture, you can see Otto of Otto Farms swimming in the water under the bridge. Many thanks to Mr. Savare for his generosity in making this piece of Hillsborough history available for all to see.

Hillsborough Turns Teal in Support of Ovarian Cancer Awareness
A group of volunteers, many of them residents who have in some way been touched by Ovarian Cancer, gathered at the Municipal Building on August 31st to Turn the Town Teal.
Ovarian cancer is the deadliest of all gynecologic cancers, and one of the five leading causes of cancer-related deaths in women.
In an effort to bring awareness to the community, teal-colored ribbons have been distributed and tied throughout the community as part of the Turn the Town Teal's national campaign.

School Back in Session Reminder From Hillsborough Police Department
The Hillsborough Police Department reminds everyone that school is back in session, which will mean increased pedestrian traffic as some students walk to school and increased bus traffic.
Please be alert to flashing lights on stopped buses as children are entering and exiting the buses. Passing a stopped bus with warning lights activated can result in a 5 point violation and substantial fines.
The Police Department will be monitoring school bus stops and active school zones throughout the school year. Motorists should allow for extra travel time and anticipate increased volume around school facilities.
Parents, please remind your children to cross all roadways only at designated crosswalks.

Somerset County Sheriff Frank Provenzano Urges Drivers to 'Be a Leader by Being a Sober Driver'
In anticipation of increased car travel for the upcoming Labor Day weekend, Sheriff Frank Provenzano is stressing the importance of safe and sober driving. He is advocating sober driving in an effort to keep impaired drivers off the road.
"I want to wish everyone a safe and happy Labor Day holiday," said Sheriff Frank Provenzano. "To ensure that our residents and visitors to Somerset County are safe, Sheriff's officers are partnering with local and state law enforcement officers in conducting sobriety checkpoints and roving patrols through Sept. 5, as part of the statewide 'Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over' campaign."
The Somerset County Sheriff's Office, in collaboration with the Safe Communities Coalition, Empower Somerset, local eating and drinking establishments and car dealerships, is hopeful the message will be taken to heart.
Sheriff Provenzano has garnered support from community businesses to promote the "John R. Elliott HERO Campaign for Designated Drivers" and the "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign, aimed at encouraging safe and sober driving.

National Preparedness Month: Build an Emergency Supply Kit
A disaster supplies kit is simply a collection of basic items your household may need in the event of an emergency.
Try to assemble your kit well in advance of an emergency. You may have to evacuate at a moment's notice and take essentials with you. You will probably not have time to search for the supplies you need or shop for them. You may need to survive on your own after an emergency. This means having your own food, water and other supplies in sufficient quantity to last for at least 72 hours. Local officials and relief workers will be on the scene after a disaster but they cannot reach everyone immediately. You could get help in hours or it might take days. Additionally, basic services such as electricity, gas, water, sewage treatment and telephones may be cut off for days or even a week, or longer. Your supplies kit should contain items to help you manage during these outages.

Suicide Overdoses in NJ Children
as Young as 10-14 Years Old
No Longer Surprising to the Poison Experts
A 14 year old had fight with dad and takes an overdose (OD) of acetaminophen, a 10 year old tried to kill himself by taking an OD of antihistamines, a 13 year old tried to kill herself by taking a large quantity of mom's medication . These calls have become all too common to the experts at the NJ Poison Center.
According to Bruce Ruck, PharmD, DABT, Managing Director of the NJ Poison Center, "the health professionals of the poison center have assisted in the management of close to 200 children from 10-14 years of age with drug overdoses."
Cases just like these are expected to continue throughout the year. "Now that school is back in session, we expect a significant uptick in calls regarding young teens trying to harm themselves by overdose," noted Diane Calello, MD, Executive and Medical Director of the NJ Poison Center.
Suicide in children is not as rare as one may think. Parents/guardians, teachers, clergy, and school administrators must heed the warming and be on the lookout for signs that a child is struggling and may be considering suicide. "As you can see by our statistics, the age of the suicidal patient is becoming younger and younger, which is quite alarming," said Dr. Ruck. Since there is no law requiring hospitals/healthcare facilities to report overdoses to the poison center, he says, it is very likely that the poison center is only capturing a small fraction of these cases compared to the true number of suicide overdose cases.
