Township Committee Recognizes Eagle Scouts from Troop 489

At the August 9th Township Committee Meeting the Mayor and Township Committee honored 3 young men from Troop 489 with proclamations for earning the prestigious achievement of Eagle Scout.

Joseph Bijas' Eagle Scout project consisted of installing brick pavers at the rear entrance of the Auten Road Intermediate School, helping to solve the frequent issue of mud being tracked through the school due to a large unpaved area. Joseph, along with 33 volunteers, worked a total of 167.5 hours, using a mini-excavator to dig out, and prepare the area for the Scouts to lay stone dust and bricks.

Ryan Centofanti designed and built a retaining wall around a bathroom at Oak Springs Girl Scout Camp. The retaining wall was created using pressure treated wooden beams, steel rebar, and metal spikes.  Ryan added a layer of river stone between the bathroom and retaining wall.  The wall will help with soil erosion and maintain a level of privacy surrounding the bathroom.

Trevor Tomczak's project consisted of cleaning and repairing the prayer path at Saint Joseph's Church in Millstone.  Trevor removed brush and nearly to twenty trees, stained and painted multiple benches, repaired a large wooden cross, and mulched two outdoor classrooms and meditation areas.  Trevor will be entering his senior year at Hillsborough High School in the fall.

1st Annual Coach Mike Krzyzewski Memorial Awards Dinner

"To me, teamwork is the beauty of our sport, where you have five acting as one. You become selfless."
-- Mike Krzyzewski

Coach K was known for his selfless dedication to the sport of basketball.  It is through an example, such
as his that prompts this letter.

Hillsborough Township was fortunate to receive a donation from the family of Bernard Michael McLafferty in honor of his memory.  "Coach Mike", a selfless, dedicated community member and youth basketball coach for many years within our community, passed away on June 23, 2012 at the age of 83.
As a result of the funds donated by his family in his memory, various improvement to the courts at AVM have recently been made possible.  These improvements included 4 new red benches, new lighting and 2 portable scoreboards, which compliment the newly refurbished courts.

Earlier this month, the 1st Annual Coach Mike Memorial Awards Dinner was held at The Landing in Hillsborough.  The McLafferty family along with Township Recreation Coaches both past and present were joined by Mayor Frank DelCore, Committeewoman Gloria McCauley, Committeeman Greg Burchette and Township Recreation Staff for the dinner and an award presentation.
The 2016 Coach Mike Memorial Award was presented to former Recreation Coach Tony Lupo in honor of his many years of dedicated service to the youth of Hillsborough Township.  Those who knew Coach Tony appreciated his high energy, fun loving ways both on and off the court.
Donations to the Coach Mike McLafferty Fund can be made through the Hillsborough Township Recreation Department.

Sator was born on Sept. 23, 1916, but family members realized it would be easier to gather everyone in the summer before the beginning of school, according to Leona Yates, a Florida relative who helped to organize the surprise party.

Mayor Frank DelCore was on hand to present  Mr. Sator with a joint New Jersey Assembly and Senate Resolution, and wish him a happy birthday, as well as thanking him for his service in the US Army during World War II.

September is National Preparedness Month

Since its inception in 2004,
National Preparedness Month is observed each September in the United States of America. Sponsored by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) within the Department of Homeland Security, National Preparedness Month encourages Americans to take steps to prepare for emergencies in their homes, businesses, schools, and communities. FEMA's Ready Campaign, the correlating public education outreach campaign, disseminates information to help the general public prepare for and respond to emergencies, including natural disasters and potential terrorist attacks.

Each week in September, the eNews will feature a different National Prepared Month theme.  Check back weekly for tips on how to make sure your family and friends are prepared for any emergency that might arise.
