Rain Garden Planted at Municipal Building
This newly installed rain garden is a green infrastructure project funded through a 319(h) Clean Water Act Grant from the NJ Department of Environmental Protection. Additional funding was provided by the NJ Agricultural experiment station, the Somerset County Board of Chosen Freeholders and the national fish and wildlife service.
A rain garden is functional landscaping designed to capture storm water and reduce flooding. They are also designed to improve water quality by acting as a filter for pollutants. Rain gardens are beautiful, low maintenance, and inexpensive gardens you can install at your home.

Swimming Pool Permit Requirements
Generally speaking, pools, spas and hot tubs are categorized into three groups: in-ground; above/on-ground permanent; and above/on-ground temporary (seasonal), which include those that are portable or inflatable.
Are permits required for all pools, spas and hot tubs? Maybe! Here is a hint.....the STATE OF NEW JERSEY DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNITY AFFAIRS, as a safety measure, requires that any pool, spa or hot tub, as defined by the International Residential Code (IRC) 2009, New Jersey Edition, as any structure intended for swimming or recreational bathing that can hold more than twenty-four (24) inches in depth of water, requires the proper Construction permits. In addition, ALL appropriate requirements of the Municipal Zoning & Engineering Codes must be met. So before you take the "plunge" and purchase a pool, spa or hot tub keep in mind that a Construction permit along with other Municipal approvals may be necessary. You, your family and the public's safety is everyone's primary concern!
The chart below illustrates what permits and approvals are needed for compliance:

Although Eastern Pacific and Atlantic hurricane seasons start on May 15 and June 1, destructive hurricanes are known to develop well before these dates. With the first storm of the season developing off the East Coast over the Memorial Day weekend, now is a good time to begin discussing hurricane risk and preparing for the tropical storm season that ends in late November. Be sure to have a plan, beinformed, be prepared for a power outage, and know your evacuation plan.
- Have a plan: You may not be with your loved ones when disaster strikes, so have a Family Emergency Communication Plan in place so you know how to reach each other and where to meet up when conditions are safe.
- Be informed: Download the FEMA mobile app for disaster resources, weather alerts, and safety tips. The app provides a customizable checklist of emergency supplies, maps of open shelters and recovery centers, disaster survival tips, and weather alerts from the National Weather Service. The app also enables users to receive push notifications reminding them to take important steps to prepare their homes and families for disasters.
- Be prepared for a power outage: If you or anyone in your household depends on medical devices that are powered by electricity, make those items a first priority. Talk to your medical equipment company to find out what will happen to your equipment during a power outage. FEMA recommends each person has at least a three-day supply of extra batteries for your flashlights, radios, and other devices run on battery power. Visit this webpage for information.
- Know your community's evacuation plans: Many communities have designated "evacuation routes" and some even have evacuation zones. You will want to be familiar with these so that if your local authorities issue an evacuation order, you'll know exactly where to go.
America's PrepareAthon! is a year round, grassroots, community-based campaign to increase national preparedness. JCP&L Prepared to Handle July Heat Wave
Company Offers Tips on How to Use Electricity Wisely During Summer Heat
FirstEnergy Corp.'s (NYSE: FE) distribution and transmission systems are prepared to meet the anticipated increase in customer electricity usage associated with 90-degree temperatures expected across the company's service area later this week.
"Our comprehensive system maintenance program helps to ensure system reliability when temperatures climb and customers depend on us to stay comfortable," said Steven E. Strah, senior vice president of FirstEnergy and president of FirstEnergy Utilities. "From western Ohio to the New Jersey shore, our electric system is designed and maintained to operate effectively even in extreme weather conditions." FirstEnergy's utilities offer some common-sense hot weather tips customers can follow to stay comfortable while using electricity wisely during this period of high demand: -
Set thermostats as high as comfort will allow. Every degree a customer can increase the temperature in their home will result in using about 3 percent less energy during the hottest summer days.
-
During sunny weather, close drapes or blinds on windows facing the sun to prevent direct radiant heating from impacting interior temperatures.
-
Use fans - moving air cools skin faster, resulting in greater comfort on hot days.
-
Use a programmable thermostat to keep temperatures higher when no one is home, and to reduce the temperature before arrival back home.
-
Only operate window air conditioners when someone is in the room.
-
Keep refrigerators and freezers as full as possible. Frozen or cold items in the refrigerator help keep other items cool, reducing the amount of work the refrigerator has to do to maintain a lower temperature.
-
Close rooms that aren't used regularly during the summer, and close the air conditioning vents in those rooms, as well.
-
Avoid using heat-producing appliances during the hottest hours of the day. The less heat produced in the home, the less work the air conditioner will have to do.
-
Consider investing in ENERGY STARŪ appliances or heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. FirstEnergy's utilities may offer rebates on these purchases and tax deductions may apply, as well.
-
Check air conditioner and furnace fan filters. Clogged filters waste energy and money by forcing HVAC systems to work harder than necessary.
