Sergeant David Fisher, Corporal Thomas McLain, Officer Stephen Nowacki, and Officer Andrew Chudy, Police Officers in the Hillsborough Township Police Department, were recognized at the June 14th Township Committee Meeting for their acts of heroism in responding to a fire in a multi-family residence on April 8, 2016.

Sergeant Fisher, Corporal McLain, Officer Nowacki, and Officer Chudy quickly assessed the gravity of the situation and entered the burning building in order to alert any remaining residents of the fire. Upon hearing calls from the second floor, Sergeant Fisher re-entered the building and guided two residents to safety.  If it were not for the bravery and heroic actions of Sergeant Fisher, Corporal McLain, Officer Nowacki, and Officer Chudy, the outcome of the fire could have been much worse.

The Mayor and Hillsborough Township Committee expressed their gratitude to Sergeant Fisher, Corporal McLain, Officer Nowacki, and Officer Chudy for their acts of heroism and selfless dedication to their community and to all those around them.

Key Addition to Sourland Mountain Preserve

A June 13th closing was held on the remaining 4.5 acres of a 78-acre acquisition of land being deeded to the Somerset County Open Space program by land owner John Higgins.  The acquisition was completed through a partnership with New Jersey Conservation Foundation and Hillsborough Township.  The purchase price for the 4.5 acres was $165,000.

New Jersey Conservation Foundation secured an option agreement to purchase the 78 acres from Mr. Higgins which was transferred to Somerset County.  Hillsborough Township has contributed $500,000 toward the county's preservation of the entire 78 acres, which had a total purchase price (including the 4.5 acres) of $1,342,472.  The county closed on the initial 73.5 acres in September 2015.

The property will remain largely in its natural state of woodland and open fields.  The remains of two structures on the property are scheduled for demolition.  The county and New Jersey Conservation Foundation will work together to develop a management plan that will outline planning and management activities most appropriate for the health and public enjoyment of the land.

Fight the Bite! Take Action to Prevent Mosquito Bites

Somerset County Freeholder Deputy Director Peter S. Palmer and the Somerset County Department of Health are reminding everyone to be prepared for the buzz of summer. Take actions to protect yourself, your family and your community from those pesky mosquitoes!

"Mosquitoes can be more than a nuisance that spoil outdoor activities," said Freeholder Palmer, health department liaison.  "Many carry serious diseases that affect humans and animals."

West Nile Virus, Chikungunya and Zika viruses are diseases that can easily be transmitted to humans through mosquito bites. In addition, children are often allergic to mosquito bites and when these bites become infected, a bacterial skin infection called impetigo can develop.

Mosquitoes can breed in just two teaspoons of stagnant water and the typical backyard can generate thousands of mosquitoes each week. Follow these steps to "Fight the Bite!" and prevent mosquitoes:

  • Discard, or empty and scrub at least every seven days, all containers in your yard that can hold water, such as tires, bottles, flowerpot saucers, small pools, buckets and tarps.
  • Keep swimming pools disinfected and filtered; do not leave a swimming pool or pool cover uncared for, even for part of the year.
  • Keep gutters clean and in good repair.
  • Repair leaky outdoor faucets.
  • Clean and change the water in birdbaths and outside pet bowls at least twice a week.

Screen or cover any outside rain barrels.
  • Clean ornamental ponds and stock with fish that feed on mosquito larvae.
  • Prevent bites by wearing long-sleeve shirts and long pants. Use a repellent containing DEET, picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus, or para-menthane-diol, following the manufacturer's instructions.
  • To keep mosquitoes outside, make sure screens fit tightly and are not torn on windows and doors.
