3RD Annual Flag Day Festival Set For June 11th

The American flag has been a symbol of our country's freedoms and ideals for more than two centuries.  In downtown Somerville on Saturday, June 11 the public is invited to celebrate the American Flag, the country's most revered symbol and to enjoy the festivities during the third annual Flag Day Festival.

Somerville Mayor Brian Gallagher and Somerset County Freeholder Director Patricia Walsh and members of the Somerville Elks Lodge #1068 will be among the speakers to kick off the festival with AT&T volunteers at 12 noon. The program will include a re-enactment of the historic photograph of Marines raising the American Flag on Iwo Jima on February 23, 1945. The Somerville Elks will also conduct a special "Flag Day" flag ceremony, normally performed within its lodge, to commemorate the birth of the American Flag and remind attendees of the importance of honoring the American Flag as a symbol of our freedoms.

John Dorell, a resident of Somerset County and founder of Operation Jersey Cares, a nonprofit dedicated to helping our troops overseas and those who have returned home, will also be honored with the Flag Day Festival "Defender of Freedom" Award, presented by AT&T.

Bring Food Donations to Ballpark on June 15 to Help Curb Hunger in Somerset County

Freeholder Director Patricia Walsh invites baseball fans to step up to the plate and help the hungry in Somerset County by bringing canned food donations to the June 15 game at TD Bank Ballpark in Bridgewater.

The Somerset Patriots will play the York Revolution starting at 7:05 p.m.  A table staffed by Curbing Hunger Inc. volunteers will be set up near the turnstiles at the ballpark entrance starting at 5:30 p.m.

Anyone bringing at least one can of food will receive a ticket voucher for that night's game.  Pre-paid ticket holders can redeem the voucher for another game during the 2016 season.

The food collection at the ballpark is being held as part of the 22nd annual Curbing Hunger Month food drive in Somerset County.  The Somerset County Board of Freeholders has proclaimed June as Curbing Hunger Month and encourages county residents to put canned food donations in plastic bags at the curb on their regular recycling days throughout the month. Donated food goes to the Food Bank Network of Somerset County, the Franklin Township Food Bank and other local food pantries.  There also is an easy online-donation option at www.CurbingHunger2016.org.

For information about the June 15 food collection at the ballpark, call the Somerset Patriots at (908) 252-0700 or contact Curbing Hunger Inc. President Chuck Knill at (908) 344-5571.
